Hollywood’s Hotel Café could have doubled as a sweat lodge when the little venue hosted a sold-out Wednesday night crowd. The four-piece blues rock group known as DELTA DEEP heated up the room with a set of songs from their self-titled debut album. From the kickass opening number, LED ZEPPELIN’s “Black Dog”, the gathering was introduced to Debbi Blackwell-Cook’s husky, swampy, deliciously-bluesy voice. The crowd roared their approval for both her vocals, as well as her wicked stage presence.
The band came adorned with a pedigree of notable musicians supporting Blackwell-Cook: Phil Collen (DEF LEPPARD, MANRAZE) on guitar and vocals, Robert DeLeo (STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, ARMY OF ANYONE) on bass, and Forrest Robinson on drums.
Although this was their debut performance, within the first few songs they had dispelled any doubt about their ability and willingness to play Delta blues. Collen attacked the guitar with DeLeo’s chest-rattling bass and Robinson’s percussion, providing that kind of full-bottomed, nasty blues that you never knew you were missing.
