Ok, before I get on with the review I just have to forewarn you that I will not be focusing on Tommy Lee’s private life. Vince Neil’s personal and legal troubles. Rumors of a reunion tour or anything like that. Cool? Cool!

Motley Crue’s Greatest Video Hits is a retrospect of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band’s twenty-plus year video history. Unlike their previous VHS release of Decade of Decadence where they started from “Live Wire” in 1981 and went through 1991, the videos on the DVD are in no order. There is good news for fans of the John Corabi era, as the three videos he sang on are included.

The tragically beautiful “Misunderstood,” the pro-marijuana “Smoke The Sky,” and the ode to one of my favorite movies, Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece A Clockwork Orange, “Hooligans Holiday.” In my humble opinion those are three of the best Crue videos. Other standout videos include “Kickstart My Heart” with a cameo by the late great Sam Kinison and “You’re All I Need,” a very chilling look of an obsessive man who murders his girlfriend. This video was banned back in 1987 by MTV. “Afraid” is another visually artistic video with an ironic cameo by Hustler publisher Larry Flynt. “Smokin’ In The Boys Room” is one of the funniest videos they did and give props to actor Michael Berryman for that one. And finally there is an animated video in there for “Hell On High Heels,” which is the final video appearance for Randy Castillo (R.I.P.)

There are also three hidden videos included on the DVD. To see the video for “Public Enemy #1,” go to the “Damn Video” page. Go to the second page of the section and highlight the entry that says “1-7” and press the following key sequence: Down, right, up, left, up, right, and down. This is very early Motley Crue. The video transfer is pretty good until you get toward the end, in which then it gets a bit fuzzy but still very viewable. To view the video for “Shout ’97,” go to “Extra Crap” section of the disc. From there go to the “Discography” and select the Generation Swine album. Once there, highlight the menu entry that reads “Next” and hit the “up” key on your remote control three times. A pentagram appears and then press “enter.” Now there is a third hidden video, however nobody I know can seem to find it. Go to the DVD’s “Main Menu” and highlight the menu entry “set up.” Now press the following key sequence: Up, up, down, up, down, left and right. This is supposed to let you see “Piece of Your Action.” This information was gotten off Blabbermouth.net, but there were some mistakes made by them. For instance they listed “Shout ‘97” twice and referred to “Generation Swine” as “Operation Swine.” If anyone of you have figured it out PLEASE post it in a rant.

The packaging of the DVD is nothing too special -- a bunch of still shots of the videos, credits, copyright dates, etc. Bonus material includes “Girls, Girls, Girls” (X-Rated Version), “Dr. Feelgood” (Alternate Version), “Primal Scream” (Uncensored Version), “Misunderstood” (Uncensored Version), “Hell On High Heels” (Uncensored Version), “Home Sweet Home” (‘91 Remix). “Back Talk” is a brand new interview with Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee where they discuss making various videos that includes a look of a bunch of archived footage.

I highly recommend this DVD. If you are a fan who grew up with Motley Crue this will be a trip down memory lane. If you’re a new fan -- and I’ve only been a fan since I was first exposed to them in college a little over six years ago -- this is a great history lesson from this Legendary Rock Band!
