Don Dokken & Co. Rock Philly a

REVIEW BY: Debby Rao

It was a long trip from Boston to Philadelphia, but it was worth every second of it. Dokken performed a fabulous show at the Electric Factory.

Dokken are currently on tour with Ratt, Warrant, Firehouse and LA Guns. I was unable to see the other bands perform that night, because I was interviewing Don Dokken.

Dokken hit the stage around 12:30 PM. The place was pretty full for a Thursday night. Don went onstage, wearing a long black coat that he got from a friend while he was on the set of the movie The Crow. Don sang his heart out.

The band opened the show with “Kiss of Death” and played all of their hits, including “The Hunter,” “Into the Fire,” and “Maddest Hatter.”

The boys rocked. I finally got to hear the new members of the band play. Alex De Rosso is now the new guitarist of the band. Don discovered him while the band was touring Europe in May. Barry Sparks is the new bass player. He has toured with Michael Schenker, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

The guys gave a 100 percent. From the moment Alex De Rosso hit the stage, he never stopped running. Don Dokken is also playing guitar on stage these days. It gave the band a very full sound. His voice his still very strong, and his stage energy amazing.

The highlight of the evening came with the crowd sing along of Alone Again. Everyone knew the words. The band then ended the evening on a heavy note with the crowd favorites “Tooth and Nail” and “In My Dreams.”

Dokken rocked Philly. The band was very tight. I got to talk to Don Dokken after the show. He told me of some of the future plans for Dokken. They have been on the road since Christmas. They are touring now with Rockfest 2002 lineup. After this tour is finished, they plan to go out on their own in the middle of September. The Rockfest tour ends September 14th in Hollywood at the Palladium. The plan is to tour the states and Europe. After the touring is finished, the band will go into the studio and record their next album, which should be released next spring.

Don also plans to release his solo album this year. He played me a couple of songs from it. It is amazing. It is totally acoustic with heart-warming lyrics.

The show was well worth the trip from Boston. Check out Dokken on tour this summer. Don Dokken has taken the band to a new dimension. New members, new album, the guys are ready to rock.

I can only recall being truly floored by a guitarist three times.Eruption/you really got me Van Halen,Queen of the ryche, Queensryche, and Paris is burning from Dokken's Breaking the chains album. I'm sorry, maybee it's just me,but Dokken just has'nt been the same since George Lynch left the band.I really have tried giving the guys that followed a fair shot, but the music just does'nt have the same....Balls!

Yeah Mattbro, when Firehouse came out in 1990, if you were a rock band, you had a shredding lead guitarist, they were a dime a dozen.Times have definitley changed. But it's cool that Firehouse is still around, Leverty shreds on thier last release, 2000's O2...good album

Yeah Dokken rocks, but this advertising, not an editorial, knac quit sending groupies to do concert reviews, did I hear George Lynch is doing rap!? George no that's not the thing to do, you didn't mention this at your phoenix guitar seminar!

dgfresh1 - 8/14/2002 11:25:16 PM
NO LYNCH....NO DOKKEN!!

Mattbro - 8/14/2002 1:29:30 PM
Fretslayer, I think the problem is that by the time Bill Leverty came along, the bar had been raised so high that it was nearly imossible for good guitar players to make a name for themselves. I wonder if ten years of subpar rock and roll musicianship (i.e. grunge and new metal) has changed that?

Fretslayer - 8/14/2002 11:53:13 AM
Reach for the sky is definitley one of thier best, and I've always thought Bill Leverty's playing gets overlooked, he shreds hard.

Mattbro - 8/14/2002 11:28:03 AM
I downloaded a couple of Firehouse songs the other day. Reach for the Sky is actually a pretty hard-rockin' song, plus the guitar player is way better than I remember him. Too bad all their pansy-ass ballads ruined their reputation.

bosox1 - 8/13/2002 3:09:28 PM
since fretslayer likes something its safe to say it sucks!!

VicRattlehead502 - 8/13/2002 1:17:44 PM
I quit listening to Dokken when I grew pubes. (1987) George Lynch is still a bad-ass, though. I wish he'd quit the whole rap thing....

Fretslayer - 8/13/2002 11:45:26 AM
Don Dokken's "Up from the ashes" cd rocks.

bosox1 - 8/13/2002 11:04:53 AM
dokkens finest moment was tooth and nail ! under lock and key was good also, the one after that was ok the one with mr scary on it. george lynch was dokken.

bosox1 - 8/13/2002 11:01:02 AM
firehouse is a joke especially that gay dude that trys to hide his gay ass bright red hair by dying it black .

missy73 - 8/13/2002 10:37:19 AM
Firehouse? Highlight of the show? Excuse me while I go laugh my ass off!

txoutlaw - 8/13/2002 10:10:37 AM
The band may use Don Dokken's name, but George Lynch made that band what it was.
