Billy Idol Live at the Clio Am

REVIEW BY: D-Man
We got a chance to catch Billy and Co. at a small outdoor venue just north of Flint, MI last Sunday night, August 11th. The venue had sold about half of its 3,000 seats, but the way Billy and Steve Stevens along with the rest of the guys played, you would have thought they were at Madison Square Garden. I was lucky enough to have front row seats combined with stadium-style seating so when we were standing during the show, we were virtually at eye-level about 5 feet away from Billy when he came to the edge of the stage (which was quite often).
To start the show, they came out with “Dancin' with Myself” and keep rocking from there. By the way, where in the hell has Idol been keeping himself… he didn't look a day older than how he looked in the early ‘80s videos on MTV, he even had the sneers and the fist pumping thing goin’ on to take me back to that time of blond spiked hair and bad boy image.
Billy's voice sounded as good as it probably ever has and he stormed through the set at a full throttle pace, stalking to the front edge of the stage, reaching out to most of the women while they were gladly reaching back to get a feel of the mighty "Billy Fucking Idol" as he introduced himself. Yeah, they even played “Mony Mony” with fire and the alternative lyrics, which I'm sure you all know... As far as musicianship, Steve Stevens was in complete control of the band and the music was as tight as hell... even through a little rock-a-billy (no pun intended) four-song thing they did in the middle of the set. Steve played a lot of acoustic Spanish type solo material and lead-ins to a couple Idol classics such as “Eyes Without a Face” and there was even a Generation X song pulled out – “Ready...Steady...Go.”
Overall it was a great night of entertainment, excellent music and a great blast from the past compliments of Billy and Steve. Thanks, guys!
