"Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy," his family said in the statement.
Earlier this year the band had announced that he was taking a break from the group due to health reasons, then this past week announced that he was officially retiring from the band and would not return.
The band's latest studio album, Rock Or Bust, will be released in North America on December 2 and the guitarist's nephew Stevie Young will accompany the band on their upcoming world tour in early 2015.
