GWAR - The Bitch is Back in De

Review by: Jared Yellin

Everyone who knows GWAR knows about their wild and crazy stage antics. This tour was no exception. Saturday, November 2 GWAR played at Harpos Concert Theater in Detroit. This was the 4th GWAR show I've seen at Harpos and every time I go GWAR packs the people in.

Unfortunatly, Harpos is in a bad area of Detroit so it's smart to get there early to get a good parking spot, but... Harpos likes to overbook opening bands so when doors open at 6, the headlining band might not go on until after 11 so I try to get their after 8 or 9. When I got to the show, 3 opening bands had just played so I had to wait through 3 more bands before GWAR. Out of the 3 opening bands I saw, everyone of them was terrible. Since the bands sucked, I didn't bother watching them so I hung out towards the merchandise booth with some of my buddies.

While I was up there, I got to talk to Danyell Stamp (Slymenstra Hymen), Todd Evans (the new Beefcake the Mighty), Mike Derks (BalSac the Jaws of Death) and the mighty David M. Brockie (Oderus Urungus). I've met Dave before and I must say, he is one of the nicest, coolest guys on the planet. If you know Dave, then you know how damn funny this man is. The new Beefcake, Todd Evans from the band Lazy American Workers was also a really cool guy. I talked to him for awhile and I found out that he's been a GWAR fan since the early Scumdog days so he was by far the perfect replacement for Casey Orr.

After talking to them for awhile, I decided to hit the floor for the last opening band. The main touring band Bloodlet sounded like garbage. First of all, the lead singer looked exactly like Chris Barnes so when he took the stage almost every person in the joint said "is that Chris Barnes?" But, this guy sounded more like the singer of POD. As far as the other members of the band went, they looked bored standing there. Finally, Bloodlet left and the roadies started setting up for GWAR. The worst part of a GWAR show is waiting for them to go on stage, so we had to wait probably about 30 minutes for them to go on. As they say, good things come to those who wait and low and behold, GWAR finally took the stage.

After about the 4th or 5th song on Clutch's Pure Rock Fury album, the lights went out and people starting cheering and chanting GWAR, then Hell Intro could be heard being played. During this people were cheering for GWAR but when the audience could see the silhouettes of the band members, that's when they started going crazy. After Hell Intro, GWAR busted out into Battle Lust and the crowd went nuts. Right before Oderus started singing, that lucky contest winner Melvin Fleebish came on stage and Oderus cut off his head just in time to sing the opening line of Battle Lust. After that Saddam Hussein came on stage and they went into Saddam A Go Go.

The rest of the show was a great collection of new tunes from the Violence has Arrived album and a good amount of older tunes from the Hell-o! and Scumdogs of the Universe album. This tour is the return of Slymenstra Hymen so she comes on stage and steals the Cuttlefish of Cthulu (Oderus's dick) because she's mad at him and he spends the rest of the first half trying to get it back.

This show had lots of new and old creatures. An updated version of YG came out and of course, Gor Gor graced the stage. During Horror of YG, Slymenstra did her famous fire dance where she breathes fire. They put George W. Bush on the wheel, killed Mike Tyson, ripped off Saddam Hussein's face, brought out the Bile driver cannon and of course, killed lots of zany monsters. To end the show, two GWAR slaves came out with these saw like cannons during Happy Death Day and Oderus had the Bile driver cannon. That song was a blur because I kept getting fake blood in my face, and I enjoyed every goddamn minute of it!

This was probably one of the best GWAR shows I've been to mainly because they played a good amount of obscure material. The highlight of the show for me (and a bunch of other people) was when they played SFW (So Fucking What). Todd Evans (the new Beefcake) was a good replacement and Cory Smoot (the new Flattus) was also a good replacement for Zach Blair. Dave was right, Todd is huge! Overall, there were a lot of people there but there was enough room to move around on the floor, unlike in years past where it was shoulder to shoulder people. The floor was pretty crazy during the first few songs and then got pretty tame as time went on. I guess people finally decided to watch the show instead of punching people in the face.

So, I left another GWAR show completely covered with fake blood, piss, cum, etc... and I was very happy with the show. I don't remember the set list in order but here are all the songs they played from each album:

Hell-O!
Slutman City
GWAR Theme
Bone Meal
Ollie North
U Ain't Shit

Scumdogs of the Universe
Salamanizer
Sick of You
Years Without Light
Horror of YG
Vlad the Impaler
Love Surgery

America Must be Destroyed
Gor Gor

This Toilet Earth
Saddam A Go Go

RagNaRok
nothing:(

Carnival of Chaos
Back to Iraq

We Kill Everything
nothing:(

Violence has Arrived
Hell Intro/Battle Lust
Abyss of Woe
Apes of Wrath
Immortal Corrupter
Bile Driver
Happy Death Day
SFW(So Fucking What)

Hey HorrorBizzness, this is the guy that wrote the review and I have heard of Hatework. In fact, I'm buddies with their old guitarist Jason (Dr. Mordhast). I've seen Hatework many times perform at Harpos and I saw them open up for GWAR at their 2000 show.

I can't wait to see these guys live someday. I hope they come back to Austin soon. I've also heard about how cool these guys really are in person. It'd be cool to meet 'em.

Wellll...i'm up and recovering from my 1st GWAR experience live, & I must say; they were everything ppl say they were plus some!! They had pretty much the same set list as the review above (except no Gor-Gor!!), and the stage antics were pretty much the same. Yes, the place was packed in tight as a muthafuka (shoulder to shoulder); If it wasn't sold out, it was damn close. Anyway, I left covered in blood, cum & piss (still got red stains on my face, arms, & shirt), but it totally rocked out!! WELCOME HOME GWAR!!!! Richmond has fuckin missed ya!!

JACKYBOY - 12/20/2002 7:41:34 PM

I remember driving to Kansas city about 10 years ago to see these guys. What an awesome show they put on.

Damaged_Inc - 12/20/2002 2:53:15 PM
Well...let's see. It's approximately 6pm EST, & I'm getting ready to head out for the GWAR show at a club called AlleyKatz in Richmond, Va. This is my 1st GWAR live experience, but i know it's gonna rock!! Being that GWAR is from Richmond, it outta be a packed house as well. I'll come back tomorrow & give my two cents on the show..as for now, I got an hour and a half drive to go see this tonight. Rock on!!

cobain_is_watching_us - 12/20/2002 1:35:04 PM
i have said it before and ill say it agin, gwar fucking rocks, i have seen them maybe like 3 times and they are amazing, im SOOOOO waiting for them to come back to L.A. alot of people i know like their show but dont like their music and i cant understand why, i think oderous has a really good voice and there are so many songs that sound different from others so i think they arent big because of the stage performance, but they are talented motherfuckers because they play a range of music styles. GWAR!!!!!!!!!GWAR!!!!!!!!!GWAR!!!!!!!!!!!
