The Scorps, Whitesnake & Dokke

REVIEW BY: Mike Roy

It had been a long time since I had seen Whitesnake and the first time ever seeing Scorpions, and let me tell you, it was incredible.

We got to the show just before it was time for Dokken to take the stage. They had a cool setup with some blacklight graphics. They opened with “Kiss of Death” and sounded pretty good. Don’s vocals were on key and he can still hit the high notes. The new guitarist will never be Lynch, but then again no one could really fill his place.

After about a 20-minute break it was time for Whitesnake. The lights went down and you could see the huge banner boasting their name and insignia. They came out warming up with some drum rolls and riffs and then David Coverdale took to the mic and yelled “Are you ready Tampa Bay?” and let a scream that sounded just like it did 15 years ago when I saw them. They blasted into “Bad Boys” and the arena went crazy. Coverdale really was in top form; he looked good and sounded incredible. Filling the guitar slots were Reb Beach from Winger (if you have ever seen him, you know he can shred) and most of the leads were played by Doug Aldrich who played with Dio, and also formed the band LION in the ‘80s. I had never seen him live, but he quickly gained my respect for being an awesome player. Tommy Aldridge was on drums and was just as incredible as ever.

After ‘Snake ended there was about another 20-minute break and then the lights went down and the stage was filled with spotlights shining into the audience. The Scorps flew out onto the stage and tore the roof off the place. Klaus’ voice was perfect and everyone in the band was giving 100%. The drummer that they have now had so much energy, jumping on his kit and breaking beer bottles over his head. He was awesome. Klaus also sported a Bucs jersey, which went over great with the Tampa crowd.

I’d have to say I think I enjoyed Whitesnake more, not saying that they were better, I guess I just enjoyed them better overall. If you get a chance to check this tour out, make sure you do, you won’t be disappointed. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, at the end of the Scorps set, Klaus said he had a special guest to introduce who was a big fan and then Brian Johnson from AC/DC came out and stayed for “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and even sang a little. It was pretty cool. Until next time.
