REVIEW BY: Wrathchild
I paid $45 bucks for a general admission ticket to see G3 live at the
House Of Blues inside of Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas,
Nevada on Friday night at 7pm. And this particular bill certainly is a
guitar fanatic's dream come true!
Yngwie Malmsteen's current album is called Attack!! and his musicians did not include Doogie White on vocals, but instead Yngwie handled vocals and lead guitars, Mick Cervino on bass, Patrik Johansson on drums and Joakim Svalberg on keyboards.
Yngwie took to the stage with his trusty Stratocaster, grabbed the
microphone and said "Las Vegas, Are You Ready To Rock?" the nearly full
capacity audience were quite enthusiastic with their replies and cheers!
The highly energetic 40 minute setlist included:
Far Beyond The Sun / Baroque / Red House (with Yngwie on vocals) / Black Star / and a few others.
He even performed one song by himself playing guitar over a backing tape
of a symphony and closed his set with the “Star Spangled Banner.”
Steve Vai's most recent album is The Secret Jewel Box and his
musicians featured Billy Sheehan on bass, Tony MacAlpine on guitar &
keyboards, Dave Weiner on additional guitar, Jeremy Colson on drums
and of course shreddin' Steve on stunt guitar and vocals.
Steve casually walked onto the stage, sat down and said, "how about that Yngwie? He's a freak, but he's a good freak!" then began playing a triple
neck guitar.
The setlist included:
The Reaper (from Bill and Ted's Bogus Adventure movie soundtrack) as well as For The Love Of God / Whispering A Prayer / Giant Balls Of Gold / Juice / and a few others.
The very satisfied crowd gave Steve Vai a standing ovation, he responded by saying, "Thank you, whaddya say I come back for more madness a little later?" …the crowd went wild!
Joe Satriani's band featured the one and only Jammin' Joe on lead guitars, Jeff Campitelli on drums, Matt Bissonette on bass, Galen Henson on additional guitar and they were promoting the album titled Strange
Beautiful Music.
The setlist included:
Satch Boogie / Ice 9 / Flying In A Blue Dream / Always With You, Always
With Me / Cool #9 / Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing / Summer Song
Despite a couple tunes sounding slightly more up temp than usual, the
crowd loved every guitar lick that was presented.
G3 played: “Keep On Rockin' In The Free World” (with Joe on vocals),
“Little Wing” (with Steve on vocals), “Voodoo Chile” (with Yngwie on
vocals), then Billy Sheehan came back onstage to sing “La Grange.”
The riff-laden show ended around 10:30pm and approximately 1,500 guitar
disciples exited the House Of Blues into the night illuminated by a full moon.
This utterly amazing tour of whammy bar virtuosity kicked off last night in Phoenix, Arizona and tomorrow G3 rocks San Diego!
john_errgh - 2/25/2006 10:13:40 AM can u give ur guitar....he..he..he..
Heretic_69 - 11/6/2003 10:41:27 AM sixxxroxxx that's funny dude! lol.
RicktheTalent - 11/6/2003 9:41:43 AM Fender Strats or Les Pauls + Marhsall Stack Tube Amps = Kick ass old school 70's blues gritty rock tone which will blow away any solid state amp out of the water. If you like that thin airy hairmetal cheese crap tone then so be it. 70's were the best time period for hard rock anyways.
sixxxroxxx - 11/6/2003 9:26:09 AM and quit askin drum questions on a strings board.....you want an exxample of a double bass triplet kick drum pattern? <burps>.......there ya go!
sixxxroxxx - 11/6/2003 9:22:16 AM it's not yngwie that suxx........its his choice of vocalists........i liked listenin to yngwie's music.....right up to the point where joe lynn turner or jeff scott soto opened their mouth........sounded like someone ran a cheese grater accross a cat's ass.
Heretic_69 - 11/6/2003 8:29:19 AM Any drummers in the room? I was reading 20 question with Marty Friedman in MetalSludge and they asked him what band should call it quits and he said "Anyone who still uses that dreadful "double bass triplet" kick drum pattern!" Can you give an example of a song with that drum pattern. Thanks, I don't know all the music lingo, but I love good metal music. Also, anybody that says Yngwie sucks, has to be retarded. It doesn't matter if you're an asshole or not or whether you're fat or not to be a good guitar player. Yngwie has influenced an entire generation of guitar players and you can't take that away from him.
Fretslayer - 11/5/2003 12:11:04 PM RicktheTalent: Dude, the fact that Malmsteen uses Marshall heads has NOTHING to do with Vai and Satch using rythm guitarists. Straight up, it sounds better to have a back up guitarist, end of story. I saw this tour, and I'm a Malmsteen fan. His tone was the worst of the evening. That straight into a marshall tone, with a Strat to make it even worse.
hardrocker442 - 11/5/2003 11:32:45 AM ricthetalent: your sure are showing you are bias to Malmsteen! The truth is Malmsteen sucks and he doesn't belong on this tour period. Doppler inc. has done a few of these shows. of course even he blew Malmsteen of the stage. it is ok to like Malmsteen it shows.
RicktheTalent - 11/5/2003 7:08:47 AM I found somethign interesting about this tour. Did you guys notice that Satch and Vai had back up guitar players, but Yngwie didn't? If Satch and Vai are so great how come they need extra tguitar players to fill in their sound? Oh yea because their stupid and use solid state amps when Malmsteen is smart and went old school with the Marshalls. Any guitar player who uses anything besides tube amps isn't really a guitar player. Their just a noise maker.
Fretslayer - 11/4/2003 12:15:58 PM Doppler Rocks!! Surprised to see someone knows his playing in here.
hardrocker442 - 11/3/2003 10:02:26 PM g3 tour
hardrocker442 - 11/3/2003 9:59:57 PM rokkaholik:doug doppler amazed kirk hammett when he was with exodus. kirk asked doug, where did you learn that crazy shit. doug being satch's best student turned kirk on to satch. doug has played on the 3g tour and blew malmsteen off the stage. doppler inc. is really amazing. if you get a chance to check them out i urge you to do so. for the record kirk can shred with the best of satch's ex students. but when you are standing on top of the moutain i guess you have to stick with change and being in metallica there is no reason to leave at least for awhile. kirk has jammed with satch and several ex students. i still think kirk will do a solo effert in the future.
KerryTheKing - 11/3/2003 11:30:17 AM yngwie rules. he is great. bUt how can you listen to those guys (malmsteen;satriani;vai...) I cant listen to them more than 20 minutes. except some of the solos.. the other ones are just the same(play fast as u can solos)
Monsterman81 - 11/2/2003 4:54:14 AM scotty36,you tell them man!i just saw G3 at the Kravis Center in west palm beach and it was killer. i dont give a rats ass what anyone thinks, those three are in the top 5 not 100 of the best rock guitarists. edward van halen being #1 of course!no doubt about it it was amazing to watch these 3. cant wait till they come back.
scotty136 - 11/1/2003 9:30:33 PM o and yes all the old school metal band doo respect this even kirk hamment...... and the rest of them all........
