Iron Maiden Live at the Univer

REVIEW BY: Charlie Steffens aka gnarly Charlie

Iron Maiden never ceases to amaze, entertain, and rock us with their mindbending performances.

Friday’s show was LA’s opener, and the band’s energy was on high. Their first number was “Wildest Dreams,” which set us up for what was going to be a great evening of music. Nothing short of a theatrical event – the stage set up was spectacular as well. They spent a good 45 minutes playing new material from Dance Of Death, and Bruce Dickinson underwent two costume changes during that set. No feather boas here, but a grim reaper outfit and war regalia that he donned during the title track “Dance Of Death” and “Paschendale” respectively. Now that’s Rock and Roll!

We heard great guitar sound and solos from the trio, particularly from Dave Murray (ok, so I’m partial). Nicko and Steve were keeping the time together, doing it with reckless abandon – Maiden Style.

What might be considered to be a low point of the show was during a high performance of “Hallowed Be Thy Name,” where Bruce slipped and fell several feet (seven feet, according to Dickinson the next night. – Ed.) from a riser, and landed next to Nicko’s drum kit. He was down for a while, and it was hard to tell how bad he was hurt. Once he was helped up he disappeared for a moment, then went on to finish the song with incredible showmanship.

It’s apparent they really like us here in Los Angeles, but Bruce Dickinson lets all audiences know how appreciative Iron Maiden is of their loyal fan base.

During the encore they played “Journeyman,” where all guitarists were seated playing their acoustics. I don’t think that the audience saw it coming but it sounded so good. Spirits were lifted by thousands of voices doing an Iron Maiden singalong. They closed the show hard, and they closed it well with “Number Of The Beast” and “Run To The Hills.”

Thanks to Arch Enemy, who put on an incredible opening act.
