Stuck in the 405 traffic, I was fearing that I would miss the beginning of Brujeria's set. I made it on time, only to realize that there were THREE opening bands. I don't remember their names, but they all had promising futures in the music industry. One in particular were from South Gate. Picture cholos with shaved heads singing in Barnes’ early CC style. The drummer even had a double bass set, complete with spinners.
The mosh pit was horrendous. I managed to wait out from slammin' in the first two bands, but jumped at first chance with the SG Cholos. Not surprisingly, there were several females in the pit. They weren't butches neither. I saw one elbow the shit out of a punker. Sorry, but if you come to a death metal show with green spikes, you're a target.
At the same token, a riot grll went down and everyone came tumbling on top of her. The last words I heard from her prior to that was, "Oh shit."
In time for Brujeria's set, everyone lit up. Security couldn't do squat -- they'd have to kick everyone out. I noticed that the pit only got as big as the floor. It seemed that everyone wanted to wait for the head honchos. The dance hall consisted of tatted up cholos, long haired grenudos locos, and tiny girls who didn't have a care in the world.
Brujeria gave their personal best. I've seen them live before, with Coal Chamber and Fear Factory, but I don't remember them kicking so much ass. (Prolly 'cause I was under the influence...) They played a lot of their new songs, and sort of regressed album by album as the night wore on. Throughout the night, “Matando Gueros” was requested by all. As soon as the intro came 'round, all the whiteys in the pit were singing along. Whether they knew the lyrics or what the song was about, they didn't care. Segue the Power Ranger pinatas, thrash cans, balloons filled with nitrous, and ziploc bags filled with a white substance thrown into the pit. If it was in someone's hands one minute, it would be on the floor the next.
Don't worry about the set list. All I can say is, they played all the good ones. If you're really itchin' to know what they played, go to one of their shows. Until then -- MoshItUp.
