An article, written by ICONOCLAST Editor William Grim, which was brought to my attention by a peer, is the exact example of the problem in the world today.
Let's see what Mr. Grim has to say regarding Heavy Metal Music and Dimebag Darrell Abbott:
"You've undoubtedly heard by now that a demented fan last week killed heavy metal guitarist Dimebag Abbott at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. While I am extremely happy to hear that the assassin was shot to death by a brave Columbus policeman and I in no way want to engage in a blaming the victim scenario, I cannot deny that there much in Mr. Abbott's demise of one being hoisted on one's petard. The squalor, inhumanity, filth (both in the metaphorical and hygienic senses), depravity, ugliness and ignorance of everything that heavy metal represents (Like rap, I cannot use the noble term music in a description of heavy metal) creates a mindset among its devotees in which Mr. Abbott's assassination was an event that was all but waiting to happen.
"It was highly amusing, and also terribly sad, to watch on television fans conducting a 'vigil' for the slain Mr. Abbott outside of the Alrosa Villa. It was an assemblage of ignorant, semi-human barbarians who were filthy in attire and manner, intellectually incoherent and above all else, hideously ugly to the point of physical deformity. Here is a definite case in which the outer appearance of these 'fans' accurately represented the hideousness of their souls. That the physical deformity of their ugliness was self-inflicted makes the spiritual tragedy of their misspent lives all the more tragic."
"But one can see why the heavy metal fans so closely identified with Mr. Abbott. He was an ignorant, barbaric, untalented possessor of a guitar and large amplifier system. Freakish in appearance, more simian than human, he was the performer of a type of "entertainment" that can be likened only to a gorilla on PCP. Lacking subtlety, wit, style, emotional range and anything approaching even the smallest iota of intellectual or musical interest, Mr. Abbott was part of a generation that has confused sputum with art and involuntary reflex actions with emotion. "
While I shouldn't even be bringing attention to this complete and utter asshole of humanity, Mr. Grim, this article so incensed me that I ask you, the audience, the "ignorant, semi-human barbarians who were filthy in attire and manner, intellectually incoherent and above all else, hideously ugly to the point of physical deformity", to e-mail Mr. Grim your opinions of his article.

I can think of quite a few things that to me are "highly amusing" regarding Mr. Grim's place in life. It also, in the same breath, makes me very sad that this human,in my opinion, is one hair away from the mental illness Mr. Gale clearly had. Dimebag Darrell is not the world's problem Mr. Grim, unintelligent, uneducated people on their self important pedestal spouting out these tirades of the stupid are.
Mr. Grim, in finality, may I point out that your article is nothing more than a demonstration of what you say this audience is. Your outlook is nothing less than equal to the ugliness of racism, anti-semitism, white supremacy, and the rest of the stereotyping issues that plague the world today. While some may argue I am propogating your message, my sole intent is to display your example as one of the disgusting existence of people like you in the human race. If one person that reads this article can learn exactly how NOT to be in life, my article has served it's purpose.
Matter of fact, Mr. Grim, I offer you the following. I will provide you with a FIRST CLASS ticket from your place of residence, FIRST CLASS hotel accomodations, a negotiated fee, and a room any size you like to read your article aloud to an open audience whereby anyone can attend. This will allow you the ability to discuss your viewpoints, face to face, with the people you label. I expect that a man of your stature will have no issues with accepting my invitation, and I expect that this audience will have no problem attending this "forum". In the meantime, Thank you very much for showing the world who you are and may your holidays bring you much joy in your infinite sadness. I don't know how you can sleep at night and I feel very very sorry for the family and friends that surround you. What that must be like, thank god I'll never know.

I have cited Mr. Grim and Iconoclast's allowance of what in my opinion is the blatant bigotry of a group in the article above. His bigoted viewpoints towards the Heavy Metal community are NO different than the racist groups world wide today. Replace the Heavy Metal community with any race or group, and his broad based defamation and hate is equal to that of these extremist groups.
Having said that, If you go to Mr. Grim's blog, http://flyovercountrychronicles.blogspot.com, he decided to further mock Dimebag Abbott and poke more fun through his new audio game show located here and entitled, YOU BE THE JUDGE. This is posted as "End of the Week Frivolity" on December 17th in audio form. In his game show, you are asked to guess the lyrics of Dimebag Abbott and his colleagues, to that of Irving Berlin.
He focuses on the topic of hate, and compares the two lyrics of the respective artists, noting the sophistication of Irving Berlin to what is tantamount to the crudeness of Dimebag Abbott. Mind you this is paraphrased, but the message is what it is, listen for yourself, closing with a snide comment and personal attack, yet AGAIN about the intelligence level and death of Mr. Abbott.
I'd like to make my own comparison if I may...

My point has been made, thank you Mr. Grim for clearly establishing yourself, your viewpoints, and confirming every word I have said. As far as Iconoclast's note of apology to a KNAC board member, I will say to you all what I said to them.
I'm sorry, but I cannot accept his notion of apology as he (Editor of Iconoclast known as M.S) chooses to continue to propagate blatant bigotry and hatred. Just as he won't give in (remove the article or cease being a vehicle for Mr. Grim to spread his hate) to "Mob Intimidation", I will not give in to the tactics of those who propagate ill intended attacks on and judgments of groups, ridden with hatred and bigotry. I have more honor, integrity and self worth than to be patronized by such a person.
These two parties, Iconoclast and William Grim have been outed for who they truly are. Mr. Grim did not respond to my e-mail containing the offer to discuss this in an open public forum in person, and any further discussion does nothing more than promote their waste of existence, as such, I bring closure with these final words.
Rest in Peace Brother Dimebag, as much as the loss of you pains us beyond words, our comfort lies in the fact that where you are now, you are free of these people of prejudicial hate.
Your memory, legacy, music and inspiration to this community will live on, unincumbered and defended by the hearts and souls of those who loved you for the joy you brought to so many.

robembury - 1/2/2006 6:36:54 AM i have had the pleasure of not only seeing the genius that was dimebag play live, but also of sharing a beer with the man. i have to say that my timing was about as poor as it gets. it was a pretty fateful night in the Pantera story, apparently the gig i saw was a big factor in their demise. phil was off his dial, and it clearly annoyed the other band members. like the legend he IS, dime ripped it up and saved the show from becoming another foul mouthed phil rant. back to the point, dime was amazing on stage and stuck to his skills without wavering. in the bar afterwards when i saw him he was clearly upset by the show. he had a line of beers in front of him and looked simply like he wanted solitude. being the selfish prick i am, i couldnt lose maybe my only chance to meet the reason i picked up a guitar. i said gday, welcome to melbourne, loved the show bla bla bla like a stupid fan. while it was obvious he wanted to be left alone, he spent the next five minutes talking to me with a smile on his face. he was genuinely interested in my place in life. and that, so ive read and heard, is typical of the man. here was a freak of nature, a man with indescribable talents, but a man who never forgot where he began and why he was where he was. i have met barbaric filthy human beings, and he was not one. i love my metal music, but i am not one either.
when everybody's anger subsides he will be remembered with happiness. in fifty years i will remember his name and his work, but i doubt i will remember the name of some elitist whinger who hides inside the network he uses to communicate his misguided hate.
it is obvious that this person has never bothered to step outside his old fashioned and narrow minded bubble to appreciate modern day talent. the classical music he loves really is not so far from talented musicians today. but he will never see. many classical musicians created dark and forboding music. and if you translated the work of dime or randy rhoads to classical scores the rersult would be a pretty talented piece of music. i fear that only then would people like mr grim (how apprpriate a name) start to see the genius. its like dismissing the words of a foreigner as hateful when you dont even understand the language. this kind of thinking is the real danger. hate will ineviatbly breed hate, but id like to trust more in the intelligence of the metal community. if responses to his comments are soaked with hatred then we are giving credibility to his words.
Let him be the only one filled with hate, and let him wallow in it for the rest of his waking days. I only remember good things about Dime, and you all know that there is no other place that he would have rather gone down in than on the stage he owned next to his brother he loved. Comments like mr grim's are obviously unfounded so dont glorify them.
im no comic or scifi buff or anything, but i really like a quote in batman returns. 'as a man i can be destroyed, but as a symbol i am immortal'. something along those lines anyway. dimebag darrell cannot be destroyed ever. he will live on in our hearts. his talents will inspire future generations. not only to make amazing music, but also to aspire to greatness. Dimebag is immortal. The man is now a legend. The legend will forever breathe through us on earth, and will shred the afterlife with randy rhoads, dave williams and many more who have left us prematurely.
I really hope william grim wakes up to himself before he too dies. A man with so much hate, anger, and misguided conceptions could only be miserable. Dont miss your chance, mate!

I am from Scotland and we have the same stigma attached to metal music. It has always been the same, those attacking that which they do not understand.
A young girl was recently murdered in Edinburgh by her boyfriend. The crime was truly hideous and my thoughts and symapthies are with her family, but the way the media handled the case was futile. The cause of the crime, or at the very least the 'demons which fuelled the killers desires'... metal music...now there talking about putting an age restriction on metal cds which contain violent imagery/artwork etc. When are people going to learn that outside factors like this do not result in murder. We are blamed of being ignorant, ugly, useless, the usual selection of demeaning words, when it is often exactly the opposite. Some of the most intelligent, well rounded and sensible people I know live for this kind of music.
And furthermore, the direct attack on Dimebag is one of the most disrespectful and tasteles I have ever read, Dimebag was a legend who inspired so many musicians, ignore the ignorance, his legend can never be taken away, not even with the most futile attempts at demoralising what he stood for, the article above is a joke, the man who wrote it is ignorant, narrow minded, egotistical....fuck it, he's a tacky bastard who does not have the slightest clue about the words he writes, wank!

I still get goosebumps just recalling my emotions watching Dime, Vince, Rex and Phil rip up the stage to a million or more people. wish I had the opportunity to watch pantera or dime live... damnit.
