"Not a Musician"

Contactmusic.com reports Latin Rock guitarist Carlos Santana has slammed Kiss frontman Gene Simmons by questioning his musical ability and branding him "Las Vegas entertainment".
Santana says he is appalled by the standard of Simmons' music and insists the rocker hides his lack of skill behind layers of gothic clothing and black make-up. "He's not a musician, he's an entertainer," Santana says. "A musician is (John) Coltrane, Bob Marley. Kiss is Las Vegas entertainment, so he wouldn't know what music is anyway. That's why he wears all that stuff.
He continues, "A musician doesn't need the mask and the mascara so there's a difference between an entertainer and a musician."
magor - 11/7/2005 10:54:10 PM battlecat, you've just dug yourself deeper with your lack of writing or English skills - your third and possibly fourth (possibly because you used a semicolon followed by a capital letter) sentence basically proves what I said about visuals being more important to you than the music, since it is that part that ultimately influenced your overall assessment of the shows (your overall assessment can be found in your rant dated 10/25 on the last line: "Santana? Boring as hell". That was your honest reactionary comment. Your last rant is trying to backpeddle from that one.
battlecat - 10/26/2005 10:35:49 AM magor, I didn't say I don't like their music. I like alot of different music for all my frames of mind. But I stand by my claim that they are boring in concert because I saw them more then once and they definately do not suck; They are not terribly exciting to watch. As far as your other comment/slam, I think its a little reaching.
magor - 10/25/2005 9:21:23 PM Forgot to add, my English isn't always perfect, but if you've read my rants, you know I agree with Ghostrider2003 who you can find with a recent rant on Yngwie's interwiew page: that we should aspire to greatness. In other words fuck the morons who would rather watch breakdancing on some inane T.V. channel with ethnic groups all preconfigured to get the channel the greatest swath of demographics watching it
as opposed to some amazing Fred Astaire stuff from the old black and whites or a folk dance show from Europe or the Appalachians for that matter. Or the morons who would rather watch a preconfigured "reality" show as opposed to the type of shows that used to be on before production costs got too high and cable began giving the other channels too much competition to be able to hire the kind of talent they did back in the "golden" age of T.V. Just another reason rap sucks hairy balls.
Because it aspires to the bottom. Up the Irons motherfuckers!!!
magor - 10/25/2005 9:06:36 PM sorry, my third line from bottom on last rant should read "Your kind of...", not "You're..."...
magor - 10/25/2005 9:04:10 PM battlecat, if you consider Santana boring though you don't mention whether you actually have been to one of his shows, and Kiss "amazing each and every time" then you're one of those cats more impressed by visuals than music. You should rent a movie next time you're thinking about a concert, since movies are even more visual. I like movies too, but when I'm in the mood to stimulate my ears I want to hear not watch. You're kind of musical ignorance is what's led to the urban areas and to some extent suburban areas of this formerly great country to have wiggas and miggas (mexican, black gangsta wannabe) driving around in their moronic lowriders blasting bass and (c)rap at everyone.
DarbysDad - 10/25/2005 4:15:20 PM Is this a story from 1976/77?
battlecat - 10/25/2005 3:46:18 PM A musician is anyone who picks up a musical instument and begins to make music regardless of anyone elses interpretation of that music. Santana, being the "spiritual" man that he is, should know this. I've been to a kiss show and ive seen santana. Kiss was amazing each and every time. Santana? Boring as hell.
DaSentinal - 10/25/2005 12:07:32 AM Someone probably asked a stupid question and heard the fucken truth. Period. And "Assgravy2", you fucken RETARD. You learned of that "Beaner" cause you saw Santana with Michelle Branch? How about the other way around. Michelle Branch being lucky enough to even be anywhere around Santana. She probably wrote that song Hu? You Dick. You must be 15 years old or an old Nerd.
Wolfrider7, You tell all the Santana fans to Sit on the their lazy-ass with the other fat-asses? You Dick. Everytime I've been to a Santana concert, I see EVERYONE on their feet and ALL the women shaking their fine asses amd titties all over the fucken place. If it was a mellow/slow tiempo song it was a fucken "Masterpiece". I seen Kiss open up for Aerosmith and it was pathetic. It was like watching a bad Karate movie. Like when a ChinaMan jumps from the ground to the roof and back down, breaks his fall, the whips out his "chucks" and beats the fuck out 10 guys pointing guns at him. A fucken crock of shit just like KISS. Wolfrider7, You must be 15 years old or an old nerd. You dick. You and "analgravy2" should get a room and fuck yourselves while listening to KISS Alive II. Both of you talk shit and give opinions about Santana and Both of you have never even been to a Santana concert. You Dicks.
magor - 10/23/2005 10:01:05 PM diss, you must never have heard Europa then because it makes Black Diamond sound like child's play. Before the rest of you Kiss fans jump all over me for that one, I have to say I do like Kiss's stuff in general,
even the disco shit they put out was OK within that genre, although most disco sucked and still does. Kiss with Ace has generally been better than Kiss without, but the reality is that Santana is a technically better musician than anyone in Kiss even if Kiss generally writes better ear candy type songs. This does not give Santana the right to criticize Simmons as
merely an entertainer when he obviously isn't. Simmons may not be Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, Jaco Pastorius, or any other virtuoso bassist, but he can play the basics
and has been able to since Kiss' earliest years, so with all the interceding years' experience probably is much better than much of Kiss' material requires him to play onstage. Because people expect a formula distinct identity kind of "sound" from Kiss at this point, Simmons can't really go balls out proving what he may or may not be able to do (well, he can, but he'd be risking sales losses). Maybe all you Kiss fans should challenge him to put out an all solo instrumental bass album. I think this has been done before by Billy Sheehan, another bass whiz, of Mr. Big and, Talon? fame though I don't remember this for sure, so correct me if I'm wrong.
scrapmetal - 10/23/2005 10:16:38 AM XXX:Nice to hear from you again-are you referring to his project in Korea?By the way,as I tried to predict to you in the Tate board, the economy is officially shitting the bed in the Northeast.
_XXXXXXXXXX_ - 10/22/2005 8:17:29 AM I respect Gene as a real estate developer...that's about it.
blackleather - 10/22/2005 8:07:31 AM savoy.....go play nintendo rock.or voodoo or black magic maybe?with santana to boot.
Legion666 - 10/22/2005 2:01:22 AM I agree with Santana, Kiss is the most over rated band in history! If you put all of Kiss' best songs together, you'd come out with one albums worth of material!
7thRingofHell - 10/21/2005 10:36:09 PM I love Carlos. Woodstock was your time. Although a Santana record didnt remove my soul and slam it through my heart like Kiss Alive. Kiss was more than just a band, they were a way of life. During Halloween did you dress up like Kiss or a mexican? Carlos is right about the music and the clown act. But the clown act was on fire Los.
spacegirl67 - 10/21/2005 7:03:04 PM Carlos is right. Gene would agree with him. I agree with Carlos' comments too...and that's why I like Kiss. Entertainment value. Love it or hate it -- that's the whole idea behind it.
