James Barber who has worked as an A&R at Geffen Records was recently interviewed by Poptones. The Guns n' Roses part of the interview follows:

Poptones: How did you get involved in Guns N’ Roses?

Barber: "Nothing else had worked, so Geffen figured they’d send me in to talk to Axl after I moved to Los Angeles. We desperately wanted the new album for Christmas 1998 and I had a year to get it finished. Whenever anyone asks me about G N'R, I think about Rutger Hauer’s line in Blade Runner: ‘I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.’"

No expense was spared; they were the biggest band in the history of the label and, even though everyone except Axl was gone, Geffen Records lived and breathed for another G N' R album.

The Robin Finck/Josh Freese/Tommy Stinson/Billy Howerdel/Dizzy Reed version of the album that existed in 1998 was pretty incredible. It still sounded like GNR but there were elements of ZEPPELIN, NINE INCH NAILS and PINK FLOYD mixed in. If Axl had recorded vocals, it would have been an absolutely contemporary record in 1999. People close to the project have since told me that I don’t know what I’m talking about, that the current version of the record in no way resembles what I heard in early 1999. That’s too bad."

Poptones: Do you think that Chinese Democracy is ever going to come out?

Barber: "I have no idea. Seven years ago, the record just needed a lead vocal and a mix. The last time I was at the studio was two days before my daughter was born. Last night she read all of ‘Hop on Pop’ to me. Some mysteries passeth all understanding."

f*** you all Axl is and always will be one of the best "real" rock n roll front men. Does "Knocking On Heaven's Door" mean nothing to you people?

eoin - 10/27/2005 12:18:17 AM
All I can remember is what Gn'R were. Saw them a few times on the Appetite tour. Christ, they were good. They rocked and indeed they were the best. Notice the past tense there Geffen? The only people who will buy this album, IF it even exists, will be sad wannabees who missed the ride the first time it came along. Sadly, Axel you are reaping what you sewed. What was all that SHit about forcing the others into signing the bands name over to you or you'd walk? In the middle of a fucking tour?? I think we should all remember the shit way he treated fans with threats like this and giving Slash ultimatums on stage and not showing up to gigs when he fuckin felt like it. Axel you were part of one of the best rock bands ever seen….and you blew it. Don’t bother insulting us with this album. Either get back with Gn'R or sod off. No ass kicking today………I’m tired !

DaSentinal - 10/25/2005 12:52:10 AM
The whole Chinese Democracy thing is beyond a "FLOP". David Lee Roth will Have a Radio show and become a DJ before this happens. Geffen should be kicked in the teeth and foot up his ass at the same time for even trying to even go on with this. Must be blowing each other. AXL Sucked then and now. Can't sing, can't dance, can't write a song. What would happen if AXL ever found himself alone with Curt Cobains Shotgun? I would order that on Pay-per-view.

China will have a fuckin democracy before this comes out!

skullbasher - 10/22/2005 10:37:29 AM
according to the book: "The band that time forgot" (which is poorly written and proof positive ANYONE (EVEN YOU!!) can get published) quotes the current cost to Geffen as $8.5 - $9 Million) So I don not want to hear these labels crying that they are not making any money due to downloading on the internet. Fuck the Labels. They are dinosuars in this age of DIY bands.

spacegirl67 - 10/21/2005 7:10:02 PM
Just like "Where's the beef?" We're asking ourselves, "Where's 'The Chinese Democracy?'" Who fuckin' cares anymore?

aaron666 - 10/21/2005 6:34:29 PM

aaron666 - 10/21/2005 6:33:48 PM
alright everybody listen up......i just ate a triple meat, and triple cheese burger. So this means that i'm going to have a rowdy shit, is that right?? lol!

webmeister - 10/21/2005 3:56:51 PM
yabba, the difference between Axl and Ace is that Ace didn't boot everyone out then form another band and name it KISS. He also did put out some albums under the name Frehley's Comet. Axl hasn't done shit.

flyingvee1 - 10/21/2005 2:59:25 PM
Another case of too much money...and too much ego ...Axl WAS,and will never be again....cause when you're HIGH...you NEVER wanna come DOWN....SUCK.. DOWN....

_XXXXXXXXXX_ - 10/21/2005 12:36:40 PM
Who care about Axl. Where the fuck is Buckethead?

analgravy2 - 10/21/2005 11:35:36 AM
Why did GNR break up anyways? I never did catch the memo on that. They put out some good shit and then just vanished.

fbomb1 - 10/21/2005 11:16:11 AM
i think axl would be great with that new band velvet revolver.......................oh,wait a minute........................

blackleather - 10/21/2005 7:29:23 AM
