From The Toronto Sun:

HELSINKI - Finnish computer science students have reportedly devised a system which enables air guitarists to hear themselves "play".

The Virtual Air Guitar project - developed by Helsinki University of Technology students Aki Kanerva, Juha Laitinen and Teemu Maki-Patola - adds genuine electric guitar sounds to the air guitar.

Using a computer to monitor the hand movements of the "player", it adds riffs and licks to match frantic mid-air finger work, reports New Scientist.

The students came up with the idea after being invited to develop a virtual instrument as part of their course.

The resulting system consists of a video camera and a computer hooked up to an appropriately loud set of speakers.

The player wears a pair of brightly coloured gloves, enabling computer vision software to keep track of their hands and detect different gestures.

ahem, my note from 12/11 should've begun with: "ETOS hit it on the nose...", not: blobber..."

magor - 12/11/2005 10:52:58 PM
bloodredd, webmeister, CFHinLa, philthyphil read my rants here dated 12/04 and 12/11. I know some of you were just joking about this invention actually playing music unless of course a given air guitarist actually knows fingerings for the actual instrument and can perform them without feeling a fretboard under his fingertips. I made my points for the people here who seemed seriously concerned or who thought they could now somehow replace real playing By the way Gorilla sht was right on about the air guitar as well as wolfsinbane. If you're a musician, no need to fear this invention putting you out of business.

Should've addressed my rants here to deadwrongg as well.

blobber hit it on the nose webmeister, and technique- wise there are a few genres even tougher to play at an advanced level, flamenco and gypsy jazz, for example. I don't disagree that bagpipes or French Horn or even Trombone are difficult, but ecclectic musicians who play all sorts of instruments will tell you guitar, lute, vihuella, violin (fiddle) and other such lead stringed instruments are the toughest to learn at the advanced level(s).

ETOS - 12/6/2005 8:02:39 PM
sorry, it was towards webmeister, not blobber, that I intended the post.

ETOS - 12/6/2005 8:00:45 PM
BLOBBER/IAKOV: Classical guitar at an advanced level becomes real fucking hard to play when it comes to live perfomances especially. The whole question of musicality, dynamics versus stress and overall attitude can get to a very, very touchy level. Even well known classical guitar monsters who produced some of the most luxurious works for the instrument, such as Francisco Tarrega, couldn't play in front of an audience of more than about 60 persons. Every intrumentist responds differently, but most of them lose about 30 to 50% of their actual capacity when playing live as a soloist. There is so much that goes on with this instrument, and when you become aware it, it's a real mental challenge to go along with, far more than the average stage rock playing.

webmeister - 12/6/2005 11:45:59 AM
Q) What did the air guitarist says when he was done with his performance? A) I'm finnish!!!

webmeister - 12/6/2005 11:44:57 AM
magor, actually bagpipes are one of the most difficult instruments to play at an advanced level, as are the french horn and trombone.

Blobber - 12/5/2005 8:14:21 PM
I'm developing a machine that will allow me to insert a meatl tube (conatining noble gases) us my ass. I will then dance and bark like a dog. jesus...please fucking take me NOW! I don't want to live this shit NO MORE!

alicenchains - 12/5/2005 10:30:11 AM
THESE FINNISH GUYS NEED TO GET TOGHETER WITH METALLICA FOR THE NEW ALBUM, MAYBE THEY WILL COME UP WITH SOME GOOD RIFFS AND SOLOS THIS TIME....

magor - 12/4/2005 11:29:19 PM
Iakov, you're a moron unless your statement is tongue- in-cheek. wolfsinbane's correct. All an airguitarist will hear is his own hands inability to duplicate what an actual guitarist can do. Now that I've put this in proper English without slang so even a moron can figure out the meaning with a dictionary I can go on to say guitar is one of the most dificult instruments to play at an advanced level. But that's alright, keep dreaming with toys like this air guitar thing or apply yourself, buy the real thing and apply yourself if you really want to learn.

Iakov - 12/4/2005 4:50:32 PM
It´s not so difficult to play guitar, you know?

Slatan420 - 12/3/2005 10:50:48 PM
Sounds easy to tune.

webmeister - 12/3/2005 6:46:27 PM
CFHinLA, did you read my other post, to Avengerkillof? I wasn't saying that all guitar players were pissed off by this, but that most of the people who are pissed off happen to be guitar players. Maybe they feel "threatened" by the thought of a drunk frat boy playing air guitar and doing a better solo than they do with a real guitar. Uh oh, I think I may have pissed off a few....

dancypants - 12/3/2005 12:25:19 PM
this ain't new, warrants been doing it for years, well, instead they put a cd of other people playing in the background instead.
