When Netflix announced it would be releasing an original Swedish miniseries about notorious bank robber Clark Olofsson directed by Jonas Åkerlund and starring Bill Skarsgård as the title character, it was enough to gather substantial attention. When it was revealed that Mikael Åkerfeldt was set to score the miniseries, it became clear this was a recipe for some Swedish treats coming our way. For his work, even though the beefier part of the story occurs during the 1970’s, Mikael created music ranging from the late 1940’s all the way through to the 1980’s, which demanded an accurate attention for details not only in composing and executing but also producing and articulating each pieces of music.
During our chat we talk about his upcoming European tour with OPETH, playing big festivals and the “Prog” landscape before tackling his first work (and certainly not last) as a score composer. From his inspirations and researches in the history of period-accurate Swedish cinema and culture to his approach on composing for a score as opposed to for OPETH, he shares some of his process and work methodology, which all happened in a cellar in Stockholm.
