Personally I thought that 'Empire' was the apex, and obviously much debate reigns in terms of which release is the best in the back catalogue. Many are more content to spend their time slagging off anything post 'Empire'.
Surely its all subjective at the end of the day (and stop calling me Shirley). If you ask yourself why it would most likely be because the band generates passion in its listeners. How many bands still do that after 20 plus? Observation to these ears is that this should not have been labelled "OMII" as really there is no real connection or enough story to call it a sequel. But as a new release of collected songs covering the subjects of regret and soul searching or contemplating the mistakes/sins of the past it is far more successful. With Queensryche you really have to listen to see if it sticks, I tried that with Q2K and failed. I think this one will hold its own. Time will tell but certainly nothing grabs you with a big chorus but it is easy to say that the range of flavours and textures in the music is broad. You get key changes and timing changes in abundance which is a challenge at times to find the hook. Certainly songs such as "The Hands" breath deeper and let you in quickly,"Speed of Light" with its lapping phrases is equally as effective, but "Fear City Slide" with its less complicated and stripped down sound is the winner. Possibly a difficult concept for the newer music listeners who want 15 of the same and no added complexity, you have to persist.
