Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' takes the crown as the number one song in VH1's metal count down of the 40 Greatest Metal Songs.
The countdown which began Monday, May 1st will culminate on Thursday, May 4th at 11 PM (Eastern/Pacific Time) with the top ten songs of all time. Former Skid Row frontman, Sebastian Bach will host the show.
Here's the top 10 greatest metal songs of all time according to VH1:

Legion666 - 5/12/2006 4:04:49 AM Mummyman, here's my take on it. I think for the definitive pioneering bands, there is a grey area between Hard Rock & Heavy Metal. For me, Metal music is basically a more intense form of Rock music. Over the years Rock N Roll has continued to evolve, you can go back all the way to Elvis Presley and others like Little Richard, the original Rock N Roll. A little after that came The Beatles, they took that early Rock N Roll sound but added new elements themselves throughout their career! Besides bands like The Beach Boys and Bob Dylan, then came The Rolling Stones, The Doors & Jimi Hendrix which all continued to progress the art of Rock music. But when bands like Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Motorhead and so forth came out, they took the music in another direction. Before them it was certainly 60's Classic Rock but now these bands took Rock music into a heavier direction which ultimately became known as Heavy Metal. Although most of the bands them selves did not claim to be Heavy Metal, the media had labeled them as Heavy Metal and that's how it all started, hence, the grey area between Hard Rock & Heavy Metal. Even Judas Priest sounded more Hard Rock when they first came out, but one thing I remember about them, they were the first band I recall to proclaim them selves as a Heavy Metal band. Sure the music has certainly continued to evolve but those bands mark the very beginning of Heavy Metal. The same thing is happening today with the Death Metal scene. For example, back in 1980’s some of the original bands of Death Metal are Possessed, Bathory & Celtic Frost but a lot of todays Death Metal fans are saying those bands are not Death Metal because they don’t sound like the current modern style. But the fact is those bands are the original Death Metal. My point is, as music evolves over the years, it is going to sound different and sure, Black Sabbath may have more Classic or Hard Rock elements than todays bands but I consider them and the other pioneers the grand parents of Heavy Metal. Again it's a grey area but there has to be a defining moment, and in my opinion that moment started with Black Sabbath, the rest is history...
