Supernova Has a Problem with CBS' "Rockstar Supernova" TV Show

All in a name

The second season of CBS's reality TV show, Rock Star may be in for a name change.

Next month, Rockstar: Supernova will debut with Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee, ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke banding together to find a lead singer for their new supergroup. But the show's producers have run into a little snag: a band named Supernova already exists.

The Orange County, California punk trio, best known for their song "Chewbacca," are considering taking legal action against the show for pilfering the band's name.

"You can't just waltz up and use our name," drummer Dave Collins, who moonlights as a lawyer, told MTV.com. "We're willing to fight for our name, our band. We have trademark rights to the name and we can prove those rights."

The members of Supernova met with Rock Star producers two weeks ago and hope to schedule another meeting this week in hopes of finding a resolution.

Last parting shot...why did I keep hearing the Oompa Loompa song every time the "Rebel Yell" guy appeared on the screen?

AApple - 7/7/2006 3:02:52 PM
Stop the show. The winner is Dilana. She is exactly what Tommy Lee is looking for.

Dude, i thought the "Roxanne" dude SUCKED beyond all reasoning. Im extremely pissed that Matt went home. He was better than both of the other guys. I dont think any of the girls should be there. They suck. I think the guy who sung "She Talks To Angels" did a pretty good job. He sounds like Gavin deGraw. And the guy who did the Stones' "Satisfaction" was okay. I love the Canadians.

I was part of the audience for the 1st show. It is a rent-a-crowd. All you have to do is go on the internet and get tickets. I did think there was some talent there, but not alot.

It's amazing that one guy would pick Duran Duran considering the three people he is competing to be in a band with. Anybody with half a brain would look up there Bio's and see what bands that Tommy, Jason and Gilby love and pick one of those to do. I think they ousted appropriately last night.

I can't understand how the Iceland dude with the gay jean jacket managed to escape the bottom three. I wouldn't even expect him to get a single vote. Perhaps all of Iceland (who must be totally ignorant when it comes to music) voted for him.

...and a partridge in a fag tree!

Blobber - 7/6/2006 1:07:36 PM
The name of the band is gaywad. The band members are gaywads, especially Jason-I'm-a-fag Newfag. The entire thing was forced and, ultimately, flacid...like an overworked porn star's cock withour a fluffer. Don't be talkin' shit 'bout American Idol, though...that's the greatest TV show of all motherfucking time, space, and dimension...'cept for maybe The Partridge Family..."I think I love you...".

Hammerthor - 7/6/2006 12:49:39 PM
Supernova is a stupid name too. Id never see them

I hear what your saying avengekiller on how it works and your probably right, I was just asked to fill in the crowd at a Wolfmother video a few weeks ago up in Hollywood and that seemed to be the routine explained to me over the e-mail. My CD collection goes from James Taylor to Slayer so I guess my musical tastes just go alot farther than hardcore music is all and some of these first timers last night brought some range. I just thought it was much more entertaining than what they do on American Idol, also I tuned in to see the Gilby, Jason, Dave, Tommy. I still think a couple of them had potential is all. We shall see how it pans out if we all continue to watch.

No..it's not the very same process at all...these people have been chosen by the production people without a yes or no from "Supernova". How do I know this?..I'm Australian myself and a good mate of mine was part of the "audition" process for the INXS series in Sydney (he also was here in Los Angeles for some of it), the same people are producing this series. The scam goes a lot further than what I'm saying here also. "Supernova" did not review demos and photos as to who they wanted to come in for an audition. The "contestants" are not playing with the band themselves either, they're playing with a bunch of hired guns and being "commented" on for the next few weeks. I don't know what auditions you've attended, none of them resemble what this circus is trying to sell. As for the rent-a-crowd..you're wrong again, it's well known here in Los Angeles that agencies do exactly that..find people to fill audiences at talent quest TV shows etc and have them pretend to be excited on cue. I know a couple of girls myself that are regularly "invited" to American Idol and awards shows to be in the audience and pretend to be excited. Damn right, I watched 10 minutes of that trainwreck and didnt' need to watch anymore, it was hilarious. You buy into this garbage, you deserve to lose your concert and cd dollars.

I watched Rockstar last summer and was totally into it. I mean there was some serious talent on last summers show. So when I heard that a new season was getting ready to start, I thought thi should be good. Well I watched it last night and I was throughly unimpressed with all the contestants. There was not one of them that stood out vocally. They all pretty much sucked. The show barely held my attention. I actually got up and went to do other stuff while it was on..ahywhooo..back to the topic. It seem like they went out and looked for anybody that had lots of tattoos, looked kind of freaky and asked them if they would like to try out for a lead singer of an unknown band.f Most of the vocals were off key. Some of those folks actually said they were close to being coming signed artisits..I seriously doubt that. Hopefully it will get a bit better in the next few shows..If it doesn't then I will not waste my time watching. I do have to say that that dude who butchered the Police song Roxanne did totally SUCK! The should have just kecked his ass off right then and there. If it keeps going as bad as it did last night they will need to rename the shoe ROCKSTAR SUPERSUCKS.

I thought the Australian guy was great and there were one or two more who had talent. Anybody ever have anythng postive to say on this site, How do you guys think bands are formed. It's the very same process as this show except there are usually not cameras at the auditions. If you think a little deeper it would not be hard to imagine that the rent a crowd were simply guests/friends of the people auditioning. Lastly, you all watched the show which shows you have interest in the very artists/people you are all slamming and calling has beens... Is anybody over 25 on this message board. Fuck Me.

Avengerkillerof - 7/6/2006 10:33:36 AM
10 minutes of this trainwreck was all I needed to be vindicated...I now believe M.C. Tommy and his "posse" thorougly deserve one these "amazing" coffee house level singers (token crumpet Brooke, referred to them as "the world's greatest unsigned rockers"..hahahaha). The funniest part is hearing the "rent-a-crowd" go wild whenever the name Supernova is mentioned..a band they've never heard...hilarious stuff(even funnier when you recall every one of these guys' solo efforts failed, including Voivod). Oh and great choice for producer too, very metal..credits like, Avril Lasagne/Latrine, Pink......Supernova (they bought it, they own it), soon to be appearing at a Starbucks near you. Savage Animal rolls off the tongue though....

Hammerthor - 7/6/2006 7:07:21 AM
I thought all of the singers were bad, Why cant they find a singer on there own?
