Tour Must Go On

From United Press International:

Despite the fighting in Lebanon, English rock band Deep Purple says it plans to perform at the Baalbeck Music Festival outside of Beirut later this year.

A press release from the band confirmed that Deep Purple would indeed honor its July 28th performance near the war-torn city, also promising an immediate makeup date should the festival's promoter choose to cancel the show.

Deep Purple is currently one-quarter of the way through a planned two year world tour and to date has not canceled a single show, a trend it hopes to continue.

Ian Gillan, lead singer of the legendary band, said the band's commitment is driven by idea that music is the universal language of the world and through its hopes to honor the loyalty of its fans through performing.

"There is a moment that begins on stage, when there are no managers, no journalists, no outside distractions -- just the band and the audience," Gillan said in the release. "This is the time when there is an unspoken exchange of energy between the fans and us that words can not describe. That makes all the other parts of the job worth it."

This is what the tenured, pony-tailed Left-overs teach. It must be true and attached to no agenga...right?

Aside from the college grad question, I answered to much of what you said as if those were the correct stats but you nonetheless reiterated your position...fine. Going back to the original question, for whom? great, even if the majority of Americans are living the good life relative to everyone else in the world (I argue this is true to most in the world but most certainly not all...Australia, Canada and Sweden could be argued easily, but I have a problem with their compliance to the manifest destiny creed as well) how is this being accomplished? I argue that the USA is experiencing its relative comfort (for it's many or few-I argue few, as if we’d leave the rest of the planet alone, we’d still enjoy more than enough of fruit of our own labors…but enough is never enough in a “system” such as this) on the empirical slave backs of others. The US is on every continent and through hegemony, terror and extortion, exerts its will -which is not benevolent- and allows it's own racist, ignorant citizens to feel that if everyone were simply to bow down to The US's will, everyone would experience wealth as if wealth creation instead of redistribution were a physical possibility. I appreciate any opportunity for real discussion without the vitriol...thanks

Come on, already, I just said you could have the last word. Make it a good one.

judasbishop - 7/28/2006 4:45:54 AM
are you here to hear it?

Cusanopaisano - 7/27/2006 7:16:48 PM
judasp, you can google all of my figures, i.e. "college graduates 27%", or "home ownership 70%". These are the highest rates in history, and they are quite meaningful to the individuals who make up the statistics. College graduation is the big dividing line in class; income, job stability, employment rate (2% unemployment for college grads, vs. 7% for high school dropouts) all point to the value of a 4-year degree. The U.S. unemployment figure includes all those searching for work in the past 52 months; this was changed in 1994, and is a valid measure, because if one cannot find the work one wants in a year then it is time to look for something else. And lastly, I appreciate your intellectual honesty in appreciating the U.S. in relation to the rest of the world. We can do better, and I am hopeful that we will. I'm out of stuff to say, please have the last word. Peace, Cus

I disagree with nearly everything you say cusano...but it at least resembles debate. Not sure on the criteria representing your 70 percent homeowner figure but considering the amount of arms, libors and 100 percent financing...I’d hardly say anyone is "owning" anything....the banks are quite happy however. The US unemployment figure is the most skewed calculator in the developed countries. It doesn't factor in those who fell off the benefits program, cons (maybe ex as well...forgot) and most importantly, those working and below the poverty line. When quality of life is added to the real unemployment it rivals any 14 percent European figure that the US loves to shame. I'm interested in where you got your college grad numbers as I've never looked into that or considered it. women and minority freedom is a strange thing to brag about but I'm fairly sure it can be argued that other "white" countries such as Canada and Australia do fine(if not better, considering abortion rights and medical access for the poor). America falls on its face fails at providing for those who cannot provide for themselves when compared to other countries. However, even after her shortcomings that are getting shorter all the time, I agree that the US is a very beneficial place in which to reside compared to most of the world. The people that fought for it to be that way and who are being forgotten are NOT the military...they are the workers who took to the streets-- sometimes violently and willing to die when they had lost everything else.

Number 2

Cusanopaisano - 7/26/2006 8:09:00 PM
judasbishop - 7/26/2006 7:31:15 PM "...cusano, for whom is this system good for?" judasb, this system is good for the 95.6% of workers who are employed. For the highest rate of homeownership in history (70%). The highest rate of college graduates (27%). Highest amount of freedom for women and minorities. Freedom of movement. Freedom of speech. Freedom of thought. All bought and paid for by great men and women who fought for the rights we enjoy (and some take for granted) today. The system is also good for those who cannot provide for themselves; U.S. society is not a pirate ship or an Eskimo village that sends sick and elderly off on an icefloe. The system is bad for those who don't care to make the most of the opportunities available, or think the world owes them something. And the U.S. doesn't exist in a vacuum; you can't compare it to perfection. You have to compare it to whatever the alternative is. The world would be a much more hateful, violent and oppressive place without the U.S.

judasbishop - 7/26/2006 7:49:54 PM
now I've tried to explain why my life has little to do with the truth of my words. Would the truth of my words only be realized by a Jesus Christ who walked the walk? EVEN if they were the same words? if this helps, every time I purchase a pair of shoes or fill up my tank or-as xxxxx so gleefully pointed out-buy a bottle of port, I contribute to the system. It is simple ad hominem to think that this negates reality. Guilt? I still laugh, fuck and eat. Are you afraid you won't be able to unless you see your life through the mythology of goodness you've associated with it? It's scary sure...like an 11 year old kid raised in a southern Baptist church daring to look up into the sky and say, "fuck you god". Understanding the world is not an end in itself- but it’s a good start. I don’t think I’m better than any starving kid in this country or that country and noticing my contributions or cures may help no one but myself or those who’d listen. Were I to stick my head in the sand and in my best “Death of a Salesman” voice say, “I am good” would my previously mentioned crimes(not to mention selling securities…lol on this strange thought you guys share)be absolved?

judasbishop - 7/26/2006 7:31:15 PM
Ahh avenger.....couldn't stay away could you? xxxxx, you're an idiot...still waiting for your description of how I engaged in post hoc. cusano, for whom is this system good for? The USA and its "system" cause much of the world's grief and the bottom 80 percent of the USA too is feeling the effects of this world wide race to the bottom. It's not even the same capitalist system it was 20 years ago or 50 years ago (close to the one it was 80 years ago). Attacking China for being an oppressive nation wouldn't be news to the irony deficient cunts I argue with in here and bringing up the unsung horrors that the USA causes shouldn't come with a made for children "now there are plenty of bad men and terrible governments in the world" caveat.

Cusanopaisano - 7/26/2006 4:37:42 PM
judasb, fwiw, your point of view is not unfamiliar to me. I just disagree with it, and especially with the way you express it. A thought for your consideration: This country may not be perfect, and the system may not reward all effort equally, but both country and system are the best around. When you compare it to all available realistic alternatives, the USA and capitalism wins. There is no contender. btw, saw Purple in L.A. last year with Satriani and Thin Lizzy, and Ian Gillan needs to pace hiimself better or get in shape.

Avengerkillerof - 7/26/2006 10:47:21 AM
LOL...three parting shots in a 20 minute time frame...just let it go Bish...damn what a fragile ego...LOL.

One doesn't need to question his integrity to know that he malforms ideas and context to fit his template. Just a bit of digging and quick analysis demonstrates this. He will put on his little philospher hat and shift focus to word meaning and try to flex tiny logic muscles (more often than not are inappropriate or wrong). But, he told me as well that he does not work due to past dealing in securities. One can conclude that: 1) This is true, and he is dealing with the guilt complex stemming from success that afflicts the Left, 2) He is full of shit...a disgruntled working stiff that feels powerless about his circumstances and comes in here with a persona that helps him feel more in control over his life or 3) This is true, and is just in here playing a role because he does not believe the ideas he posts in here; making it a slight derivation of number 2 above. I have my money on 3, with 2 coming in a close second.
