Meliah Rage The Deep and Dreamless Sleep

During the 80's, Meliah Rage were a vital part of Boston’s thrash metal scene. Now, Meliah Rage has returned with all original members except for singer Mike Munro who has been replaced by Paul Souza.

It has been awhile, since I have heard Meliah Rage, and on first listen to the new album, it was extremely apparent to me, that their new sound resembled that of Metallica. The album also blends powerful, ferocious guitar riffs that could be compared to early Iron Maiden.

The album is skillfully mastered, creating a more commercial sound. Part of this is also due to Paul Souza's more melodic vocals, compared to the heavier vocals of former singer Mike Munro.

The opening track, ”Permanently Damaged" sets the stage for blistering riffs, and the excellent guitar work of Jim Koury, and Anthony Nichols. The band slams into ”God and Man", which has an Alice in Chains feel. "Undefeated" features the driving rhythm section of drummer Stu Dowie, and bassist Darren Lourie.

The title track, ”The Deep and Dreamless Sleep”, has a dark approach, and moody guitar riff that is very haunting. Like the cover of the album; depicting trees with no leaves on a barren, almost moon-like surface, the song creates a very moody, dark ambiance.

The song, ”Curse" showcases the bands' thrash metal roots. The album ends with a more speed metal track, ”Take What You Want".

I really enjoyed the modern guitar direction Meliah Rage is taking on The Deep and Dreamless Sleep. The new material blends stellar guitar work, interesting lyrics with a singer, who has more of a diverse commercial appeal.

Meliah Rage are currently opening for Metal Church on a month, long tour which kicked off on the West Coast on January 8th.
