Bassist Rudy Sarzo Says Randy Rhoads Documentary Is Not Based On My Book

Former Quiet Riot/Ozzy Osbourne/current DIO bassist Rudy Sarzo has issued a statement in response to a recent press release from Quiet Riot singer Kevin DuBrow in which he explains his reason why he "declined to participate" in the upcoming documentary about late Ozzy Osbourne/Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads.

Sarzo spoke to KNAC.COM contributor Deb Rao saying, "In response to a recent press release from Kevin Dubrow, I’m compelled to address his statements regarding claims of inaccuracies in my book, Off The Rails, and towards an upcoming Randy Rhoads documentary now in production.

I want to highly stress that Dakota Film’s Randy Rhoads documentary, that is being directed by Peter Margolis, is not based on my book, Off The Rails or any book for that matter. In no way, is the film scripted. It is based on interviews from family members, childhood friends, former band members and fans who want to share their memories and express their feelings about Randy in this special tribute.

The documentary's director, Peter Margolis, is an ex-student of Randy Rhoads. His life was truly influenced by Randy's music and friendship. The film has 100 percent support and participation of the Rhoads family and from what I understand, Kelle Rhoads will be contributing to the soundtrack of the film.

I sincerely hope that Kevin's animosity towards me, which he’s been harboring for nearly 25 years, does not extend into this well-meaning project.

In response to Mr. DuBrow's statement that my book is filled with inaccuracies, well, I have yet to see him back up his allegations. Besides, out of the 24 chapters in the book there is only one that refers to my time with Randy in Quiet Riot. The other 23 chapters are about my memories of Randy during my period in Ozzy's band."

With the blessings of the Rhoads family, Dakota Pictures and Director Peter Margolis began filming the Randy Rhoads Documentary on March 19, 2007 at the Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino, CA.

"Live and Dangerous" is a must-have. Lizzy help set the stage for a more melodic, song oriented, pop-sensible hard rock. Not many hard rock bands at that time using those jazzy minor 7th chords and playing harmony solos on stage. No doubt they had some very weak material, but thier quality stuff is brilliant and still holds up well to anything since. I'd love to see a track listing as to just what Sykes played on "Slide It In." He was brought in late on the recording and has even said himself he doesn't know track-for-track what was used. There is a UK version that doesn't have him on the record at all. So, while I love that album, I have to agree with Phry that "Whitesnake" is his tour-de-force, as he played every note of guitar on that record, save the solo to "Here I Go Again" which is Adrian Vandenberg. F'in' Coverdale buried him in the mix, though.

Ill disagree on that one Phry-I thought his playing was smoking hot on both recordings. As for Lizzy, definitely had poor recordings due to Low budgets & drug addled sessions & busness decisions (as detailed in the recent Classic Rock articles). But live they were unstoppable and any of their compilations showcase their power, insturmental prowess & songwriting brilliance.Start with Dedication, get the box set and buy the 2 live albums.

at his most diverse*

btw, Thin Lizzy had some awful albums--both in terms of song production and sound quality. I'm bein' honest, not an ass. However, Thin Lizzy kicks some ass..I guess.

scrap: "SYkes was at his best on SLide It In and Thunder & Lightning."..dude the WS self entitled album was his best contribution, IMO. I wish I didn't have to chose such a well-known album, but I do. That album represented Sykes at his diverse within that limited scope.

thin lizzy was one of the most awesomely underated/underapreciated bands ever..man they were fuckin amazing man albums like renegade, bad reputation, black rose, nightlife, fighting" were amazing for it's time or any other time, thunder and lighting & chinatown are fuckin classics ( love the sugar blues from chinatown) and of course phill lynott ( rip bro, we REALLY miss ya) one of the best singer/songwriters of all-time

Oh my Phry,I hope you were just looking for a reaction.A second rate Lizzy is better than a BLue Murder reunion anyday I think. As for Franklin,I liked him in the Firm (he also performs on the new Carmine Appice with a plethora of axeman including Nugent) but BLue Murder was a mess live.SYkes was at his best on SLide It In and Thunder & Lightning.

whoa whoa whoa whoa.... Phry- did you really say "screw Thin Lizzy"? I used to think you were ok.

Glam_Chowder - 5/17/2007 7:24:41 AM
You know, scrap, everyone talks about Coverdale's ego, but it seems Sykes has one hell of one, too. After all, he hired a lead singer for the second Blue Murder album, only to overdub his own vocals on every track but one at the last minute. It's not surprising he and DC can't work together for long. Handling all guitar duties and lead vocals in a heavy metal band is beyond tough, and I agree, there should have been a second guitar player, if not keys too, for the live shows. The background vocals were weak, too. I think this was more in keeping JS the total focus of the group. But, damn, the guy can rip and has the tone to match. Never cared much for Franklin - too busy and not much bottom end in his sound.

I saw Blue Murder & it was a disjointed affair badly in need of a rytyhm guitarist-a lesson learned by Sykes when he took the last gasp of Lizzy on the road several years back. He's a great player but he cant sing & do all the guitar parts by himself.Add the always busy Tony Franklin on bass & you get the picture.

Glam_Chowder - 5/16/2007 8:19:08 AM
Phry - I would love to see a Blue Murder reunion, and Sykes has said it is a possibility in several interviews, and it has been discussed. A Sykes/Coverdale/Dunbar/Murray project would be sweet, too.

"his resume' reads like a list of every award show and TV show done over the last 15-20 years. Peter truley, is not in it for the money. He's highly respected in the Entertainment Industry"...ummmm, that's not exactly worthy of all that praise. A huge proportion of TV programning ,and pretty much all award shows are fucking dreadful, especially in the last 15 years. Being respected in the industry, usually means you can get something in on time and under budget while incorporating as many "Dawson's Creek", "Gilmour Girls" and "The OC" starlets and actors into a poorly written MTV level film/promotional vehicle.

Peter Margolis, the director of the Randy Rhoads Documentary, is a stand up guy. Peter was a student of Randy's and his resume' reads like a list of every award show and TV show done over the last 15-20 years. Peter truley, is not in it for the money. He's highly respected in the Entertainment Industry and Peter's only intent behind this Documentary is to remember Randy Rhoads. Kevin Dubrow needs to get over himself. While others fight to remember Randy Rhoads, Kevin just fights. Hey Kevin, you might as well face it your a dick with a rug.
