stevereno - 6/13/2007 11:01:25 AM btw - thanks scrap
stevereno - 6/13/2007 9:09:25 AM Johnny Lang fucked himself with the whole disney thing. He does more gymnastics with his face than his fingers too...comes off as totally fake to me.
stevereno - 6/13/2007 9:08:17 AM sorry to step on some toes boys...all grundge is not bad...cantrell is a very good player and I do like soundgarden. I guess I really like tighter, higher tempo rock than the depressed, introspective offerings grundge has. As far as AIC - all one needs to do is look at Weilind today to see that his whole "act" back then was just posing. He is mister fashion junky now. So much for sitting in a rocking chair being all depressed and dark on unplugged. There is nothing wrong with musical evolution, but to totally change based on whats hot now just sucks to me and shows no real commitment to what or who you are. I wonder if Scott saw a picture of himself in a green feather boa, wearing makeup, looking anorexic and dancing like a moron 10 years ago what he would think about himself...
DrDom - 6/12/2007 4:17:02 PM ozzy is increible.
phry - 6/12/2007 3:27:43 PM scrap, I agree. And the blues are great.
Glam_Chowder - 6/12/2007 2:58:18 PM Well, scrap, if he does last another five years, that would be a recording career of over 10...not bad these days. Again, I'm not a big fan of the guy, but to call him a "flavor of the month" six years after his successful debut album doesn't make much sense.
fizzgig - 6/12/2007 2:51:38 PM And for every good song Soundgarden had, they had another one that was just sludgy, plodding, psychedelic noise. For every "Rusty Cage," there was a "Searching With My Good Eye Closed," and for every "The Day I Tried to Live," there was a "Mailman."
fizzgig - 6/12/2007 2:46:30 PM Speaking of Jonny Lang, what's he done since about '99 or so? Didn't he "get religion" and give up the blues? I always thought he only got attention because he was a cute teenage boy. Hell, his voice cracked worse than Mike Tramp's even, but at least Jonny had an excuse. Can't really comment on his playing, since I've never liked his music. Now, Walter Trout! "Obstacles In My Way" is such a cool song!
scrapmetal - 6/12/2007 1:51:54 PM OK Phry, then make it three years-the guy does not rate
as a blues guitarist compared to the dozens if not hundreds worldwide who are serious about their craft.
He's flavor of the month-you'll never hear of him within 5 years tops save for rumours of his fling with Jessica (Im so insecure i got more plastic surgery than Pamela Ding Dong ANdersen) Simpson.AGain, what about Walter Trout,Johnny Lang,Papa Chubby, etc, etc? Or are the blues considered too simple for your elitist musician like tastes?
metaldominator - 6/12/2007 10:40:50 AM sorry phry....AIC was a great band, but Soundgarden was by far the best band of the grunger era. One of my favorite bands ever. 1-2 punch of Badmotorfinger and Superunknown knocked out all the competition
Glam_Chowder - 6/12/2007 10:08:01 AM phry - all music fans are not musicians. I was mainly commenting on exposure in general. How many radio stations (non-satellite) are spinning blues music? Popular TV shows/movies using it on a regular basis? Sorry the guy is cute and popular, but I've seen the guy play close-up at a blues club and the boy can rip and has fantastic tone. If just one kid seeks out Hendrix or SRV because of Mayer and trades in his Good Charlotte CDs - that can't be a bad thing. What does it matter who it comes from?
phry - 6/12/2007 8:40:47 AM virtuoso*
phry - 6/12/2007 7:24:11 AM scrap: "It makes me physically ill to see him regarded as a virtuso after what 3 recordings?"...what do album releases have to do with whether or not one is a virtuso?
phry - 6/12/2007 7:19:49 AM "he's (Mayer) introducing blues to a whole new generation who may have never heard of heard of those old guys."...I don't know, when I was just starting out as a guitarist I sought out the "old guys", and I hope those starting up aren't relying on this guy to introduce them to anything.
Glam_Chowder - 6/12/2007 7:05:32 AM Well, Mayer can't have the blues too much - he's bangin' Jessica Simpson. He might now "have" something else... I give the guy credit cause here's this young cat who could totally sit back and do the "dreamy pop songwriter" thing for the young females but chooses to hail SRV and kick out some blues on a Strat. Credibility tarnished or not, he's introducing blues to a whole new generation who may have never heard of heard of those old guys. I don't care for him personally or his music, but I do think the guy is talented and honest in his appreciation of the blues. And given who's out there right now, the guitar mags have to put someone on the cover instead of rehashing the greats over and over.
