W.A.S.P. mastermind Blackie Lawless will be participating in an Internet live chat with USAToday.com. Blackie will be discussing the current controversy regarding The Who's Pete Townshend and the lack of support from the music community. Don Dokken will take part in a live chat on America Online on Thursday, January 23rd at 9:00 PM EST.

Mudvayne will perform live on The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn on January 31st.

Tribe of Judah, featuring vocalist Gary Cherone (ex-Van Halen, ex-Extreme), performed live at Hollywood’s Viper Room last Monday. After 5 songs off their debut album, Exit Elvis, Cherone yelled, “Is there a doctor in the house?!” where much to everyone’s surprise, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony appeared on stage to heal the masses, with “Somebody Get me A Doctor.” Then, they proceeded to launch into Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll,” getting a little help from guitarist Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme). Anthony later reappeared on stage that night with Ralph Saenz and the rest of Metal Shop for Van Halen classics, “Unchained” and “Hot For Teacher.” (A review of this show will be posted soon. –Ed.)

Unconfirmed reports claim that Biohazard have pulled off the Kittie tour, due to an apparent hospitalization of vocalist/bassist Evan Seinfeld. More info as that becomes available.

This year’s March Metal Meltdown will be held March 7th & 8th at the Cricket Club in Irvington, NJ. The following artists are slated to appear: Dave Brockie Experience, Nuclear Assault, Dog Fashion Disco, Goatwhore, God Dethroned, Overkill, Nile, Budgie and Behemoth.

Lamb Of God are wrapping up their latest studio effort, As The Palace Burns, which is being produced by Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad). The album includes appearances from Chris Poland (ex-Megadeth) and Steve Austin (Today is the Day), as well as Townshend.

Blaze is scheduled to release As Live As It Gets on March 24th, 2003. The live album will feature 18 tracks, which will cover Blaze, Iron Maiden and Wolfsbane tunes.

Hatebreed will video their next single, “Perseverance” the first week of February, and should begin airing in mid-Spring. In the meantime, Hatebreed have the following gigs lined up with Agnostic Front and Murphy’s Law:

Guitarist Zakk Wylde has been working on Derek Sherinian’s (Planet X, ex-Alice Cooper, ex-Dream Theater) next solo record, in which he will perform on three songs. The album is slated for release in April. Check out DerekSherinian.com for more details.

In other Zakk Wylde news, he, as well as many other musicians, including Pantera, Metallica, KISS, etc. were inducted into the first Hard Rock museum in Orlando, Florida on January16th. Zakk will have a vest, guitar and the Guitar World with he and Ozzy on the cover encased and displayed. Check out HardRockCafe.com for more info.

And even more Zakk news: Last Thursday, Ozzy went down to the studio where Black Label Society has been recording at, with the MTV cameras and crew, and sang on the first single from the Blessed Hellride, entitled "Stillborn." The song is extremely radio friendly, much more than anything (including the ballads) that Zakk has done in the past. Ozzy actually said, "If this is not a hit record, you should just pack up and quit!" Ozzy also listened to the entire album and told Zakk, "You are going to rule the world!"

John Arch, former front man of the ever-popular progressive rock band Fates Warning, has just signed a solo deal with Metal Blade Records. The solo EP will be approximately 20 minutes in length and John Arch will have the help of some amazing musicians backing him up like Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) on guitar, Joey Vera (Fates Warning) on bass and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) on drums. The tentative title will be John Arch -- A Twist of Fate. More information soon to follow.

A box set containing the chronicles of Ronnie James Dio's career through Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio is scheduled to be released through Rhino Records. More info as that’s available.

Pete Townshend (The Who) was recently arrested in London on suspicion of pedophiliac activities. Although Townsend admitted to visiting child pornography web sites, he says it was for the sake of research. Although he has not formally been charged with the crime, an investigation is still pending.

Upon the recent disbandment of Primer 55, drummer Preston Nash has already moved on, and will replace Dan Hill in The Color Red.

Molly Hatchet’s live double-disc album, Locked and Loaded, is set for release on February 24th through SPV Records.

Helloween will release their as-yet-untitled album in Europe on May 5th, 2003, through Nuclear Blast. A US release date is still pending. The album will feature a guest appearance by drummer Mikkey Dee (Motorhead).

Drummer Mick Finn of the famous glam band T. Rex has passed away on January 11th, 2003. The cause of death has yet to be determined. More info is available at T-Rex.co.uk.

Bassist Nikki Sixx is co-writing with Meatloaf on the latter’s forthcoming effort, I Couldn’t Have Said It Better Myself.

(hed)p.e. is getting ready to shoot the video for the title track from their forthcoming album, Blackout, which is due March 18th on Jive Records. Lead singer/songwriter Jahred assures (hed)p.e. fans that it'll be unlike anything they've seen before. He explains, "I don't want to give anything away, but I can tell you that this is gonna be the dopest video our fans have ever seen! I'm pumped just thinking about it and I can't wait to get on the set already. All I can say is this: Beware of the Shadows." Guitarist Sonny Mayo (formerly with Amen and Snot) will make his first on-screen appearance with the band in the video. Tour plans for (hed)p.e. kicking off in March are currently being confirmed and will be announced within the next few weeks.

Deep Purple is in the songwriting/recording process with producer Michael Bradford (Kid Rock), and anticipate an August 1st release date.

Iced Earth have officially signed over to SPV/Steamhammer Records for the world after seven full-length albums on Century Media Records. Meanwhile, Iced Earth are working on their upcoming studio album, Glorious Burden.

Morbid Angel are presently in the songwriting stage for their next effort, expected to release by September through Earache Records. The new line-up will be announced soon, since the departure of bassist/vocalist Jared Anderson and guitarist Erik Rutan.

Cradle of Filth will release their latest effort, Damnation and a Day, through Sony on March 10th throughout Europe. A US release date has yet to be confirmed.

Guano Apes have set Walking On A Thin Line as the title for their forthcoming third full-length album, due next month through Supersonic/G.U.N. Records.

The NAMM Convention is being held in Anaheim, CA on January 17th –19th, 2003. Featured performers include Jeff Berlin (YES), John Novello (Niacin), Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Andy West (Rama–1, Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse), Mike Keneally (Beer For Dolphins, Frank Zappa), Michael Manring (Attention Deficit), Billy Sheehan (Niacin), Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple), The Skol Trio, and Simon Phillips (Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend). Metallica sure keep their attorneys in business! This time around, Metallica is suing ‘Metallica,’ a small punk Canadian band of the same name. The band has been ordered to cease and desist using the name by the close of today.

Apparently vocalist/guitarist Kip Winger has been recruited to perform a couple of gigs with the Alan Parsons Project

Linkin Park’s forthcoming release, Meteora, is due to release on March 25th, 2003.

Six Feet Under vocalist Chris Barnes checks in with the following information: “We have just confirmed 2 major festivals in Europe for summer 2003 --Graspop in Belgium, and With Full Force in Germany. More European dates surrounding the festival dates will be added soon. We will also be filming the With Full Force show for an upcoming live DVD, due to the killer response we’ve had with Double Dead! More on that later. SFU is currently beginning to write our next CD. We’ve got some great ideas for this next release and are really gonna concentrate on making this the best CD we’ve put out -- for real! Other than that I don’t wanna give too much away -- youll have to wait for the final product!! Recording is slated for March 2003. Metal Blade is looking at a summer release date for the CD. The Used, Rancid, Dropkick Murphy’s, Finch and Glassjaw have been tapped to perform on this year’s Warped Tour. Headlining the event is Poison the Well.

Lollapalooza, the annual festival spearheaded by vocalist Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction), has been on hiatus for the last 5 years. This year, the festival organizers are looking towards corporate sponsorship in order to afford high-end artists to possibly perform this year. More info as that’s available.
