In what comes as a shock to nearly everyone worldwide, longtime SOUNDGARDEN frontman Chris Cornell has died at age 52 following the band's performance in Detroit at the Fox Theatre last night, May 17th.
Cornell's rep Brian Bumbery released the following statement:
“His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”
Station WXYZ in Detroit is reporting that police are calling his death an 'apparent suicide', stating:
"Police say Cornell's wife called a family friend and asked him to check on his well-being. The friend forced open the hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor, according to police. We're told Cornell was pronounced dead on the scene."
SOUNDGARDEN was on a month-long North American tour that was to include stops at several World's Loudest Month festivals including the recently held Fort Rock festival and the upcoming Rock On The Range and Rocklahoma festivals.
