New Album and Tour for Opeth By Newsferatu, Writer Monday, September 19, 2005 @ 9:49 AM
Swedish Rock innovators Opeth have arrived on the world stage in a major way. Their new album, "Ghost Reveries," sold 15,000 copies in it's first week, tripling the band's best-ever first week sales to date, and placing the record at #1 on the Billboard Current Hard Music Chart, #8 on the Top Hard Music Chart and #64 on the Top 200 Albums Chart for the week. The video for the first single from the album, “The Grand Conjuration,” can currently be seen on MTV2’s Headbangers Ball and on Fuse.
An album that Kerrang calls "baffling, utterly hypnotic and quite, quite
brilliant" Ghost Reveries finds itself in strange company, sharing the chart with the likes of Lifehouse, The Eagles, and Guns N' Roses. But as the sales of bands like The Mars Volta, System Of A Down, and Queens Of The Stone Age can attest, the audience for groundbreaking, interesting music grows over time so Opeth's path is well laid out.
In support of the new album, the band is set to embark on the North American leg of the Ghost Reveries World Tour. The outing begins on October 9th in Phoenix, Arizona and will run through North America through mid-November 2005. Supporting the band directly on this run will be Pelican (through Oct 22nd) then Nevermore (beginning the 24th). Openers Fireball Ministry (through Oct 30) then Into Eternity (beginning the 31st) have recently been added to the bill.

With notoriously lengthy songs (many surpassing the 8-minute mark) the band are just hitting their stride after about 30 minutes playing music, about the length of their sets on the summer of 2005’s Sounds of the Underground tour. “After only being able to play 3 or 4 songs on Sounds of the Underground, it will be great to have the freedom to do a 90-minute set encompassing our wide repertoire,” says vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt of the band’s extended stage time on this outing.
Kerrang! has praised Ghost Reveries as "The best album that anyone will
produce this year," and The Aquarian Weekly agrees saying it has “decimated any competition (for best metal release of the year).” Critics all over the world are celebrating Opeth's ability to weave an intricate sonic web unlike any on the rock scene today. Witness the ‘conjuration’ for yourself!
