"The Lobster!!!" KNAC FM's First Morning Man to Visit Studio to Remember Tawn Mastrey, Bring Rare Version of "Rock Candy" By Newsferatu, Writer Wednesday, October 3, 2007 @ 4:39 AM
Paul Wells, better known to die-hard KNAC FM fans as The Lobster will be joining Diana DeVille in studio this morning. As a close friend of Tawn Mastrey, Wells can share stories about his many years working with Tawn in San Francisco's KSJO and at KNAC FM (1986).
Wells brings with him a rare piece of music history that only those who heard it on KSJO in the late 70's would remember. The song is a live version of “Rock Candy.” On www.Tawnmastreybenefit.com, there’s a picture of the KSJO staff backstage at Bill Graham’s Winterland in San Francisco for KSJO’s 10th Anniversary show on May 19th, 1978. Ronnie Montrose was on tour, with an instrumental band, middling for Journey...the opening act on the tour, ironically enough, was Van Halen! Sammy Hagar was the headliner of the show over Alvin Lee. Hagar invited Neal Schon of Journey, Eddie Money and his guitarist Jimmy Lyons to jam with Sammy and his band. First Shon came out on stage for the encore, and since Montrose had showed him the chords, they did a scorching version of this classic Metal Anthem, "Rock Candy".
Tune in this morning at 8:30 to hear the song and the interview.
