Every time Ramón ‘Oscuro’ Martos writes a new book, I say it’s my favorite. Because it is. This author keeps topping himself! ‘...And Justice For Art - Ultimate Edition’ is the fifth book that he has written, and easily my favorite. The subject of the book, as you may have guessed, is Heavy Metal album cover art. But within the pages of this book, much more is discussed and the creators are put high up on the pedestal they deserve. In the realm of discussion and analysis of album artwork, Ramón is categorically without peer and has proven he is the ultimate authority on the subject; this new volume proves it yet again!
The book is gorgeous. The ‘Ultimate Edition’ is a beautiful, hardcover, high-quality coffee table-sized book. It weighs over 13 pounds and features 372 glossy color pages. It features more than 700 graphics and hundreds of comments and interviews about the making of some of the most iconic album covers in the history of Heavy Metal. The design of the book is clean, attractive and engaging. Ramón has once again utilized Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu, who returns to provide amazing cover art. Former Morbid Angel frontman David Vincent contributes the forward.
This edition was limited to 500 copies (less than 70 are still available) and contains comments and interviews with legendary bands like RAINBOW, DEEP PURPLE, ANTHRAX, METALLICA, DIO, ICED EARTH, Opeth, Slayer, Amorphis, Blind Guardian, Witchfinder General, Testament, Paradise Lost, Sodom, Cattle Decapitation, At The Gates, Mayhem, Sigh, Borknagar, Tyr, Katatonia, Enslaved, and many more. The book features interviews with important visual artists such as Eliran Kantor, Travis Smith, Costin Chioreanu, Dan Seagrave, Ken Kelly, Derek Riggs, Andreas Marschall, Wes Benscoter and Michael R. Whelan, among others. All of the interviews were conducted exclusively for this book, you won’t read this anywhere else.
Just a few of the classic artworks explored in detail in the book are:
Black Sabbath’s ‘Black Sabbath’ (1970)
Iron Maiden’s ‘Killers’ (1981)
Metallica’s ‘...And Justice For All’ (1988)
Sodom’s ‘Better Off Dead’ (1990)
Pantera’s ‘Vulgar Display Of Power’ (1992)
Slayer’s ‘Reign In Blood’ (1986)
