Intensity Is At Its Highest At The Glasshouse On October 11th

Remember kids, “Hate Is Reality” as stated on the NAILBOMB song ‘World Of Shit’. So on night 2 of a double-fisted weekend full of Metal, I was here to see that very band, Max Cavalera and his Metal family. A drive out to the Glasshouse in Pomona, a place I need to drive out to more often for shows, an area with plenty of open and free parking in the active neighborhood full of delicious restaurants like Hen and Heffers and bars like O’Donovan’s - a great atmosphere with a great all ages venue with an open GA floor. With a large led, curved LED screen behind the band on a decent size stage, overall it’s a less stressful and more fun option than the Whisky date a few nights prior.

This bill that was basically a Cavalera family jam was a really fun show, crowd included. INCITE are a band I’ve seen several times over the years and with vocalist Ritchie Cavalera (Max’s stepson) who I’ve watched grow into a highly energetic and powerful frontman, they bring a real, feel-good energy to any show. Not to be dismissed as simply playing in the shadow of the CAVALERA name, INCITE are an underrated band that deserves more recognition. Their set consisted mostly (6 songs) from last years release “Savage New Times” (Reigning Phoenix Music) and from 2022’s “Wake Up Dead”.

Next up was NAILBOMB, the side-project (when the term actually meant something) of Max and FUDGE TUNNEL’s Alex Newport. This (at the time) was a unique group blending Thrash, Industrial and a bit of Crust-Punk that was way ahead of the curve back in the early 90’s. Their debut and only album “Point Blank” was groundbreaking at the time and still to this day as one of Max’s most achieving moments. Starting the set with the opening track from their 1994 debut with ‘Wasting Away’, the crowd immediately went into a fury. The early intensity of the circle pit was a breath of fresh air that really shows unity, nothing like the coward-like “hardcore” dancing of the night I had before.

I don’t believe it was known NB would burn through nearly the entire “Point Blank” album. In the band along for this ride was Max’s son, Igor on guitar and sick drummer Adam Jarvis (MISERY INDEX) with PIG DESTROYER bandmate Alex Cha who was breaking his neck as he fed in those samples and Max’s GO AHEAD AND DIE (GAAD) bandmate Jackie Cruz on bass.

Hearing them riffle through ‘Guerillas’, ‘Blind and Lost’, ‘Cockroaches’, the cult favorite ‘World Of Shit’, ‘Religious Cancer’ and ending their historic set with ‘Sick Life’ - this has to be considered an iconic moment and the fact that Max can still suck in the crowd and get the floor moving, is almost no surprise but testament of the power his voice has.

How you follow that up, only Max himself knows as he had little time to rest and pull double-duty. The band that he created after his dramatic departure from SEPULTURA, SOULFLY was almost a saving grace during that desperate time in heavy music as Nu-Metal became the hot topic at the time. The very same people that still hold onto that nostalgia were certainly present in the crowd. A slight change in the audience and pit from the previous set, SOULFLY still was engaging. At only 57 years old, Max has always been that powerful Metal magnet after all these years, looking very good and much thinner these days, both pre and post SEPUTURA fans can’t get enough. Hitting us with a couple of classics from their first 2 albums with ‘Back to the Primitive’, ‘Jumpdafuckup’, ‘Eye for an Eye’, ‘No Hope = No Fear’ - these got the crowd moving the most. The set also included ‘Favela/Dystopia’ and ‘No Pain = No Power’ from last year’s release “Chama”. The rest of their set included cuts from “3”, “Dark Ages” and “Prophecy” as well.

Between the energy of the crowd that was a blend of both young and old, from the talent Max shared the stage with on this night and tour and certainly over the past, it is no doubt keeping his spirits up and energy going. In a time when we’re running out of Metal icons in this existence, the world needs Max AND Igorr Cavalera.

Shoutout to my friend Natalie (Nova) and her band BEYOND THE ROOTS who were added on short notice to this show. They really brought some good energy to start off the entire night, pulling no punches as the crowd drifted in.
