Co-Headline Bands Lay Waste To The Novo On October 10th

Night One of back to back shows I’d attend that weekend with the first happening in Downtown L.A. for the co-headlined show involving DYING FETUS and SANGUISUSGABOGG. A combo bringing 2 distant eras of bands who mesh Death Metal and Slam.
Part of this tour package were some interesting selections with a 2 piece from the Midwest known as DETERIORATION. LEFT TO SUFFER from Georgia and the mighty heavyweights, another true veteran with CROWBAR.
First, let me go on record to say today’s idea of hardcore dancing is a largely de-evolved mentality. The “crowd-killing”, karate dancing bullsh*t is a coward's game. I hate it and so do many others. “lEt ThEm HaVe FuN”. No… punching and kicking bystanders, something you wouldn’t otherwise do face-to-face is chickensh!t. So don’t cry when someone hands you back the check.
There was definitely an apparent large presence of a younger crowd there to see the openers and “THE BOGG”, while the older crowd was there for DYING FETUS and CROWBAR. This kind of tour package exposes young ears to those who were here first and are still here, showing these new bands how exactly it’s done.
DETERIORATION who is made up of the Kahmann brothers who hail from Minnesota who have actually been around since 2003 and have 14 full length albums to their name. They came and just laid down some brutal grind-core that was straight and to the point. Squeezing in a crazy 17 songs into a 25min set. Atlanta’s LEFT TO SUFFER, another young group who also came out in 2019 with also a 25 min set, left it all on stage dishing out 9 songs. With the singer looking like a Jellyroll doppleganger of the Metal world, not only adapting the look but owning up to how they label themselves, nu-deathcore, which I wouldn’t boast too much about. It’s Slam, embrace it.
CROWBAR are the true heavyweight champs of sludge. While there was certainly a young presence in the crowd many of them were still amped up to see the band from New Orleans. Cancer survivor Tommy Buckley (SOILENT GREEN, and by the way shoutout to Ben Falgoust for stage teching for the band) lays down some great feel on drums as Kirk and Matt Brunson dish out some sick riffs as they piled through a good chunk of their discography with songs from ‘Odd Fellows Rest’, ‘Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form’, their self-titled, ‘Equilibrium’ and ‘Sever the Wicked Hand’. Feel good music that leaves you with stink-face as the weight of their sound pummels you.
SANGUISUGABOGG, a young band that has already released 3 albums since their 2019 EP is from Ohio and has gained some momentum really quick. Jumping on some great tour packages has helped spread their seed quite a bit, going from just an opening band to co-headliner and headliner. It’s a hit with the young crowd who literally kick and scream at their shows. Their drummer, who looks like he’s giving minimal effort while playing, dishes out some really tight, sick grooves. Not much about stage presence because everyone is busy just simply pounding your ears with their great tunes. Vocalist Devin Swank owns the stage more as he paces back and forth and really engages with the crowd. One clever thing is introducing “Murder Ball” where he tosses a football into the crowd and promises the last person standing with it, some free merch and who doesn’t like free merch? For fans of bands like SUFFOCATION’s more thick slam grooves, SANGUISUGABOGG bring some intense brutal slam death metal.
DYING FETUS never disappoint. Here you have 3 guys that sound so tight on their delivery, piledriving song after song at you, the most intense groove and quick transitions into blast-beats that will leave your neck sore as well as you body if you dare step into what are some of the most brutal and true death metal circle pits. Amazingly they rammed through nearly their whole discography, doling out a song each from ‘Reign Supreme’, ‘Descend Into Depravity’, ‘Destroy the Opposition’, ‘Grotesque Impalement’, ‘Killing on Adrenaline’, ‘Make Them Beg for Death’, ‘Purification Through Violence’, ‘Stop at Nothing ‘ and ‘Wrong One to Fuck With’. So you can see they hit all the marks but damn, an hour isn’t enough from the guys from Maryland. But on a full night of 5 bands, that was enough. Taking a punch from a dancing twirp and getting pelted by a full beer, the night was non stop rager. Full props to all the bands on this sick package.
