There are some assignments that fall squarely into my comfort zone, and then there are shows like LINDSEY STIRLING. Covering one of the biggest names in instrumental pop for a rock publication isn't something I expected, and after seeing her performance at Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls, I can honestly say it was one of the least "rock" shows I've ever reviewed for KNAC. Oddly enough, the Untamed Tour turned out to be one of the most engaging concerts I’ve ever seen.

Opening the evening was PVRIS, fronted by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Lynn Gunn. Since emerging from the Massachusetts alternative scene over a decade ago, the three-piece band has built a loyal following by blending alternative rock with electronic pop, synth textures, and atmospheric production. Their music has evolved considerably over the years, leaning more heavily into pop while maintaining occasional rock elements.

As someone whose tastes run much heavier, PVRIS wasn't my “thing.” That said, they sounded good, and Lynn Gunn's vocals were consistently strong throughout the set. If you enjoy modern electronic pop with alternative influences, there's plenty to appreciate. Performance-wise, the three-piece band was fairly static, offering little in the way of stage movement or visual excitement aside from Gunn circulating the stage. They delivered the songs well, but the performance itself felt restrained.

Going into the headlining set, I wasn’t prepared for what I was about to experience. I knew Lindsey Stirling played violin and danced around the stage. I vaguely remembered that she had been dismissed on 'America's Got Talent' early in her career because critics didn't believe there was an audience for her unique style. As it turns out, those critics couldn't have been more wrong.

Stirling has built an enormous global fanbase by refusing to fit neatly into any single musical category. Blending classical violin with EDM, hip-hop, pop, dubstep, cinematic production, and a little bit of rock, she has carved out a path entirely her own. More importantly, she has become an accomplished live performer whose concerts are as much theatrical spectacles as they are musical performances. What unfolded on stage before my eyes was far beyond anything I expected.

The production was elaborate from the first note, featuring multiple costume changes, beautifully choreographed dancers, stunning lighting, and aerial routines on silks and hoops straight out of a Cirque du Soleil performance. Every song seemed to introduce another visual surprise, creating a performance that was constantly engaging.

The evening followed the theme of the Hero's Journey, weaving together music, storytelling, and motivational messages. Between songs, Stirling spoke directly with the audience about perseverance, overcoming obstacles, and discovering inner strength. One message that resonated throughout the night was what she called "taking a pause;” understanding that even during times when it feels like nothing is happening, important growth is taking place just beneath the surface. It was a genuinely uplifting message, particularly for the many younger fans in attendance.

While the show leaned heavily into electronic pop, there were enough nods to rock to keep even someone like me engaged. Opening with an energetic take on LED ZEPPLIN’s "Kashmir" immediately caught my attention, and later in the evening "Shatter Me," originally recorded with HALESTORM vocalist Lzzy Hale, delivered one of the heavier moments of the night. Another standout came with Stirling's fiery interpretation of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Her technical ability on the violin is remarkable, but it's the way she combines that musicianship with lighting, choreography, and nonstop movement that makes her performances so impressive. I’m sure it's hard enough playing violin at that level while standing still, let alone while running, dancing, silking upside down, and interacting with the audience. I was exhausted just watching her!

The 18-song set concluded with "Eye of the Untold Her," which brought PVRIS vocalist Lynn Gunn back to the stage for a fitting finale and a strong collaborative finish to the night. I was only allowed to shoot the first four songs of the show, which is unfortunate because many of the biggest visual moments, including the aerial work and several costume changes, came later in the performance. I'd love to show you those incredible moments, but you're just going to have to experience them for yourself.

No, this wasn't the type of rock show I’m used to. Not even close. But it was exceptionally well produced, visually stunning, thoughtfully orchestrated, and genuinely inspiring. LINDSEY STIRLING delivers much more than a concert; she delivers an experience for all ages. Whether you're already a fan or, like me, walk in knowing very little about her music, it's difficult not to appreciate the talent, creativity, and positivity she brings to the stage. If this tour comes anywhere near you, it's absolutely worth seeing. Even for a lifelong rock fan, this was an unexpectedly memorable night. Bravo, Lindsey!
