Summertime is just around the corner in Texas and as the temperatures started to rise so did the local concert junket as the Mark Tremonti-led ALTER BRIDGE rolled into town on the band's 'What Lies Within' Tour in support of their most recent self-titled album which dropped in early January. Also joining the festivities were opening act TIM MONTANA and direct support FILTER who literally just joined the tour in Houston for their first show on the bill.
TIM MONTANA, from Montana, is noted as a country-rock artist though his performance showed little of the country genre and more of the straight ahead blue collar rock. Early on in his set he mentioned how personal it was to be in Houston as his sister, a breast cancer survivor, was in attendance, having been treated locally at one of the nation's most renowned cancer treatment centers, MD Anderson Cancer Center, where not only she but her mother were treated. He gave huge props to MD Anderson and a nice shout out to his sister Mary. As mentioned, his set was a solid rock performance which was kicked off with "Beautiful Hate" and then followed up with "Get You Some" and "Break Me Down" (a song that garnered him his first Top 30 entry) before performing their only cover of the evening, fittingly Houston natives ZZ TOP's "Brown Sugar", as Montana revealed that Billy Gibbons and Slash had contributed to the studio recording of the song. Montana also debuted a new track, "Watch Me Drown" which is set for release in July. The band finished their 7-song appearance with "Devil You Know" from their most recent 2025 album, 'Savage'. Montana's set was definitely what the crowd needed to get primed and ready for what would follow.

FILTER was up next and although I initially thought that they were kind of the odd-band-out on this particular bill, the Richard Patrick (ARMY OF ANYONE, THE DAMNING WELL and former touring guitarist for NINE INCH NAILS) fronted group brought their industrial, alternative style of rock to the crowd. Patrick, bathed in what can only be described as a photographer's nightmare of virtually no front lighting and only backlighting of mostly red color, rarely strayed from center stage, letting the music do the talking throughout their set that started with "You Walk Away" from the group's 2002 release, 'The Amalgamut'. The band has provided a steady diet of studio albums over the years, including the 2023 release, 'The Algorithm', from which they would include 3 songs, "Drowning", "Face Down" and "Obliteration".
Patrick kept the between-song banter to a minimum but did reveal that Houston was the band's first performance on this tour and they had just recently played with CREED (which includes 3 of ALTER BRIDGE's members), which added to the bond he relishes with them on this trek. As expected, FILTER closed out their set with by far their most recognizable tune, "Hey Man, Nice Shot", reminding everyone why they were one of the more formidable acts of the 90's and beyond.
Setlist:
"You Walk Away"
"The Drowning"
"(Can't You) Trip Like I Do"
"Face Down"
"All the Good"
"Take a Picture"
"Obliteration"
"Jurassitol"
"Welcome to the Fold"

Finally at 9:15 it was time for ALTER BRIDGE. It's hard to fathom that they've been a group for over 20 years now, rising from the ashes of the CREED implosion of the early 2000s with frontman Myles Kennedy joining guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips. The band has released 8 full length studio albums during that time span including the aforementioned self-titled opus that dropped earlier this year.
If you've never caught the band in a live setting, they're known for a high energy affair and tonight's appearance was certainly no exception. They wasted no time putting the pedal down as they stated the evening with "Silent Divide", one of three tracks they would include from that release including "Playing Aces" and "Tested And Able". The rest of the set was a solid mixture of songs from across their catalog, with inclusions from 5 of their 8 records, including the tour debut of "Come To Life" from their 2007 sophomore album, 'Blackbird'.
The band was energetic and engaging throughout the night, with Kennedy apologizing for his potty mouth during one of the between song's dialogue with the crowd. The ALTER BRIDGE guys were all smiles throughout and Tremonti, who is not only a master of his axe craft, showed off his vocal chops as well on "Burn It Down". The crowd knew their material inside and out and would have gladly sung the entire set without Kennedy uttering a word as evidenced by the multiple instances of crowd participation sprinkled throughout the evening. Visually, the lighting and giant LED screen draped behind them added another layer of greatness to what was already a perfect night. A quick check of prior setlists reveals that the band are tossing things up a bit too, with some songs being played on different nights and even the order changing on occasion so you never know what you'll get.
As the band finished up the main portion of their time with "Rise Today" and "Metalingus", it was clear that the Bayou Music Center was not ready to let them go that easily, clamoring for their heroes to return. Obviously they did, capping off a memorable night with a two-track encore, "Blackbird" and "Isolation".
